KLEPTOMANIAC’S DAY

A VARIED COLLECTION. No kleptomaniac could ask more of life than in one short day he should succeed in bringing off 17 thefts in succession. This was the recent record in Paris of Pierre Machecourt by the middle of a recent afternoon, when, his luck failing him, he was arrested after an exciting chase through the streets of the Latin Quarter. Machecourt, a certified kleptomaniac, escaped from a mental hospital a week previously. What his adventures have been during his week of liberty may never be known, but the objects found in his pockets when he was arrested, indicated the catholicity of his tastes. “All these things,” said Pierre calmly, /‘I have taken to-day.” “These things,” included 24 latchkeys, a various assortment, of securities representing about £BOO, a number of military and civil identity papers, many valueless odds and ends and a list of articles which Pierre thought he would like to add to his collection. Pierre Machecourt was captured after arousing the suspicion of a concierge, who wondered why he was leaving a house in the Rue du Cardinal-Lemoine so precipitately and ran after him.
