MEETINGS

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the Grey Automobile Association, held last evening, was attended by Dr. W. McKay (Chairman), Messrs J. Hambleton, G. R Harker, E. McDonnell, L. W. Louisson, P. Hambleton, W. Sampson, and W. F. Harley (secretary). Au apology for absence was received from Mr J. M. Bunt.

Correspondence was received from the Highways Board with reference to the bridging of the Waimakariri River, and the improvement of the road between Arthur’s Pass and Otira. It was stated that a survey would be made to ascertain the best place for a bridge, but the work would not necessarily be proceeded with immediately. From time to time, the road through to Christchurch would be improved. On the motion of Mr Louisson, it was resolved to ask the Public Works Department to expedite the survey at the Waimakariri crossing, to give employment to a number of the unemployed, and to ask that other unemployed be given relief work in improving the road between the river and Arthur’s Pass. A copy of the resolution is to be sent to the members of Parliament for Canterbury and Westland. Mr Harker and the secretary gave a brief outline of the delegation with Mr J. Hawkes, general secretary of the Association, to the Public Works Engineer at Christchurch, with reference to the bridging of the Waimakariri at the Bealey. Mr Langbien, the Engineer, considered that a bridge about the size of the present railway bridge crossing the river would be essential, and that it should be taken about two miles further up towards the head waters of the river. He estimated the cost of making the road and constructing the bridge at approximately £20,000. | It was decided to write to the Greymouth Borough Council asking that parking places for cars in the Borough be definitely defined; also that proper arrangements should be made for the parking of cars and buses at the Opera House. The attention of the Association was drawn to the poor road visibility at the junction of the Paroa and Rutherglen roads, and it was suggested that the roadway be improved by widening under the railway bridge at the junction; also that the hill at James’s cutting be regraded to give better visibility to cars approaching the small bridge there. It was decided to bring these matters to the notice of the Grey County Council. Advice was received fc'om the Canterbury Association that, during the coming tourist season, it is proposed to place a patrolman and a van on the West Coast roads, to give aid to tourists and others who may require it. In addition to the necessary equipment for repairing cars, the van will be equipped with a stretcher and firstaid outfit, for use in accident cases. The secretary was instructed to get in touch with the Engineer of the Public Works Department and the Brunner Borough Council, regarding the necessity for widening the bridge at Wallsend, to make it available for two-way traffic. It is considered that the bridge in its present narrow condition is dangerous- to users of .the road, and one- or two accidents have already occurred. The Chairman, Mr McDonnell, and the secretary were appointed a committee to interview Grogan’s Lane property holders, with a view to securing the adoption of improved measures for the safety of traffic. Messrs J. Donaldson and J. Hassall were elected new members.
