NEW QUARTZ REEF
DISCOVERED NEAR WAIUTA.
Every prospector cherishes his dream of a lucky strike, with resultant elevation to the ranks of the more fortunate among the human race. Ninety-nine in a hundred such dreams fail to materialise. West Coast prospectors are no exception. Take Messrs F. Harrison find D. Absalom, for instance. For twenty years, they have been engaged in the goldmining industry, with periodical bouts of prospecting fever. They believed that all the gold-bearing quartz in the district was not on the property of the Blackwafer Mines, and they persevered in their quest for it. In January this year, their dream came true, so far as the finding of the reef was concerned, and it' was definitely located, the site being about five miles south of Waiuta. Development work is in full swing. The top level has been driven for a distance of 70 feet, the reef struck being 4ft. 6ins. thick. A winze was sunk for 50 feet, and the reef again proved. The low level is to be driven a distance of 140 feet. The preliminary assays have returned approximately one ounce of gold to the ton. The stone so far proved totals anything up to 1000 tons, and further development work is expected to give even better results. The discoverers regard the reef as one of the most promising located on the West Coast for many years. A five-stamp battery has been purchased, and they expect to start crushing in four or five months. Messrs Harrison and Absalom intend to develop the property themselves, and shares will not be available to the public.
