FIRE OUTBREAKS

WOMAN'S FATAL BURNS.

[PER PRESS association.] . DUNEDIN, June 18., A tragic fire occurred in a tworoomed cottage in South Dunedin early this evening. An elderly woman, Miss Bertha Diehle, 84 years of age, •was burned to death. When the Brigade arrived on the scene the cottage Avas burning fiercely, and on information being received that the oid woman had been seen in the building a few hours before the outbreak, strenuous efforts were made to enter tho house.

When the flames were finally subdued, the bod/ of the deceased was found lying near a sofa in the kitchen, where, it is supposed, the fire first started. The deceased is said to have relatives in Invercargill. SCHOOLBOYS ARRESTED WANGANUI, June 17. The police have arrested two schoolboys in connection with the fire at, the Wanganui East school on Sunday evening. SAMOAN STORE ABLAZE. (Recd. June 19, 8 a.m.) APIA, June 17. A big blaze occurred at 8.30 to-night, at Morris Hedstrom Ltd., packing department. Tho sheds -were burnt out. Good work by the police and others made a good save of the adjacent main store, over ■which is the manager’s residence. The new manager in place of the deportee, Mr Smyth, arrived on Saturday last, taking over from the retiring manager, Mr Johnson. The total damage is not yet ascertained, but little was saved.
