MAHENO SETTLEMENT.
DUNEDIN, June 13.
The dispute which arose yesterday in connection with the engagement of a crew for the inter-colonial passenger steamer “Maheno” was settled this afternoon. Negotiations for a settlement of the trouble .were carried on during the morning between the Union Steam Ship Company and the officials of the Seamen’s Union and the men concerned, but it was not until after 3 p.m. that the announcement was made that no further obstacle would be placed in the way of securing a crew for the ship. The men who were seeking berths, numbering over 100, gathered at the Government Shipping Office shortly after 4 p.m., and the work of the officials then commenced. The men signed articles, and then proceeded to Port Chalmers to join the “Maheno.” The terms of the settlement were not announced.
The “Maheno” will sail from Port Chalmers to-morrow evening for Bluff and Melbourne, thereby taking up her former running in the Melbourne-New Zealand service.
