KINGFISHER’S FOOD.

[to the editor.] Sir, —The menu of the kingfisher covers mice, lizards, insects, and small fish. In the History of New Zealand Birds, by Sir Buller, it is recorded that kingfishers attack very young domestic chickens. At Wanganui when sparrows were first introduced to this country the kingfisher preyed on the young. They caught young fry at tho hatchery of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. In the Auckland Acclimatisation Society’s report 1868-69, it is stated that

they killed Californian Quail. I, myself, have seen a. kingfisher pounce from a tree and seize a silver eye in its beak and devour it feathers and all. —Yours etc., “OLD BIRD.” Greymouth, June 12.
