Melbourne Cup Honours: ' In the Shade, .Prodice and Desert Glow have been nominated for the Melbourne Cup contest/

Good Recovery: , Elysianor is recovering f from his break down at Auckland. He will be blistered and spelled with a view to a trip to Sydney for batten racing in the spring.

King’s Jest for Trentham: King’s Jest, winner of the Great Northern Hurdle Race, will run at the Wellington meeting next month, where he will contest the principal hurdle events. It is understood that A. E. Ellis will be offered the mount. Tuku:

The Reefton-owned four-year-old, Tuku, has been at Ricarton in charge of C. McCarthy since returning from Dunedin, and is to fulfil engagements at Timaru next week. Hurdlers at Hawke’s Bay:

It is reported that Charlatan and Wharncliffe, who are both in work at Waipukurau, are likely to be seen out at the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting.

First Sight: First Sight is.being kept in useful exercise, and may be seen out at the Wellington winter meeting. Hoariri Retired:

Owing to a recurrence of the unsoundness which has interfered with his preparation on past occasions, it has been decided to retire Hoariri from the turf, and this once brilliant sprinter will be given a term of stud duty. F. C. Porter

It is reported that the Veteran jockey, F. C. Porter, intends making his home in Auckland, and will carry out the duties of a trainer. After his retirement Porter took up a hotel business, but racing, proved irresistible and a horse under his care affords him the opportunity to set up as a trainer.

Maori Boy: The win registered by Maori Boy in the York Handicap was most impressive, the Lucullus horse taking charge half-way through the race, and from then on the issue was never in doubt. This horse had been galloping in great style prior to>the meeting, and it was rather surprising to find him paying a double-figiure dividend, although his moderate showing in the Cornwall Handicap probably accounted for this to some extent. Not Entertained:

A Victorian owner made application for the name of Amy Johnson for a yearling .filly, but the authorities replied that his and several other similar requests would not be entertained. It was evidently left to New Zealand to allow the name to be registered. The Victorian Club has put a stop to the claiming of such nomenclature.

Mangani’s Unlucky Day: The last day of the Great Northern Meeting has been an unlucky, day for Mangani, for he has now lost what appeared to be golden chances of success on that day for two years in succession. Last year, when out by himself with the Winter Steeplechase apparently in safo keeping, he fell at the second to last fence, while this year he fell at the last fence just when he appeared likely to win the Campbell Hurdles. , Bisox Killed: The Bisogne mare, Bisox, a Winter Cup and Avondale Cup winner, came to an untimely end recently, by being knocked down by a motor car. HORSES AT RICCARTON. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. On a* round of the hurdles on Wednesday, Aberfeldy gave a greatly improved display, and he is now almost at the top of his form. -According to present intentions he will contest both hurdle races at Timaru, and then be kept going with a view to Grand National hhrdle honours. Such a proved stayer and a smart jumper must have a chance with, the best of the North Island contingent.

Arikiwai continues to do well in his work, with a view to Timaru engagements. Unless the track is firm, however, he will not be a starter. A recent addition to F. Scoullar’s team is a tvzo-yeqr-okl daughter of Arrowsmith and Carette, owned by Mr F. Shaw. She look's like developing into a useful three-year-old. Limerick was given his first hard task a few mornings ago, when he was galloped with Arikiwai ovei- three furlongs. The champion put plenty of dash into his task, and puled up so well as to suggest his training on. In the meantime ho will be kept going, and should all go well, may make another trip to Australia in the early spring. His brother, Dunraven, is also being doing well, and he may be included in Jones’s team for Australia.

Big fields will b© seen out in all the trotting events at Ashburton on Saturday, when the chief attraction will be the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. This event will bring out what promises to be the best field of two-year-olds ever assembled in New Zealand, several of whom have already shown smart form. In Arethusa, Mr. H. G. Nicoll possesses a rare filly’ and with Rod Shadow, she should be on hand over the concluding stages. So far Author Willings has raced with bad luck, and his turn may come in tho Trial Handicap.

Lucky Voyage and Lough Gay arc not badly placed in the Longbeach Handicap, while Lydia and Editor are assured of strong support in the Acton Handicap.

Tho chief event of the day, the Ashburton Handicap, is very open, and is certain to produce a good contest. The Shrew and Linkman are a pair vzith favourable prospects.

Of.those engaged in the Stewards’ Hand’icap, Fifa and King’s Voyage may to the most dependable, while John Jinks and Rey Logan read well in the Winter Handicap.
