In the contest for the world’s heavyweight championship, Schmelling (Germany) defeated Sharkey in the fourth round, on a foul. Sharkej r ran across the ring when the bell rang for the fifth round, but Schmelling would not come out, and the count went on, as both fighters’ managers crowded into the ring and besieged the referee. Thus, the contest, which was avowedly for the world’s championship, ended with the German contender the victor, lying helplessly on the canvas.
OTHER BOUTS.
NEW YORK, June 11.
A message from Philadelphia states: Ernie Schaef, of Boston, scaling 200 lbs, won a ten round decision from Tommy Loughran, weighing 1891b5., the bout convincing the onlookers that Tommy Loughran is now about finished as a heavyweight contender. The loser gave Schaaf a game battle, but his younger opponent was too swift for him, and he ended up fresh while Tommy’s condition was poor. At New York, the Britisher, Jack Berg, took a ten rounds decision from Herman Perlick, Kalamazoo, Michigan. The fight was fast and spectacular throughout.
