OPERA HOUSE.
“Give and Take,” a comedy special, is to be screened at this evening’s performance. The story touches one of the modern phases of business and shows the advantages and disadvantages of the system whereby employ- ' crs share in the profits of the company for which they work. It concerns a fruit canning- factory. The owner has built up his business step by step, bearing the entire responsibility of financing it. His son returns from college and feeling that as he is a member of the firm, and should demonstrate fair play to the employee, endeavours to put the business on a profit-sharing basis. “Stairs of Sand” will be screened at Sunday night’s picture benefit. The story has to do with a young dance hall girl in an Arizona desert town of the late 80’s, who is loved by two “bad” men of the town. Her struggle to free herself from the power of their iron wills seems futile, until a young Easterner appears upon the scene, triumphs over the menace, and wins her love. VAUDEVILLE. Katie Gourlay and Jo«ie S. Pastor, imported artists, will present their musical and acrobatic comedy “Wee Nips o’ Scotch” at Ikamatua. on Monday night. Dance included. MAWHERA DANCE. The Mysterious Card dance at the Oddfellows’ Hall to-night is the latest Mawhera Club’s novelty. Prizes will be awarded the winners. Steel’s orchestra will supply the latest musical hits. JACK’S HALL, KOTUKU. Come along one and all to the Grand Ball which is being held in the above Hall, on Saturday, May 17. An energetic committee have the preparations well in hand, and .everyone is assured of a good night’s enjoyment. Fletcher’s orchestra will supply first class music. INGLESIDE.
The monthly Ingleside of the Grey Caledonian Society was held last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, there being a good attendance of members. The programme for the evening was in the capable hands of the Cobden Ladies, and proved to be enjoyable, much variety of items being introduced. During the evening the Cobden Orchestra, consisting of Messrs. F. Eggleton (piano), L. Abbie and J. Duncan (violins), D. Abbie (clarionet), and S Palmer (cornet) rendered several selections, being greatly appreciated by all present; it is hoped thenappearance may be the forerunner of many more. The following items were also given: Vocal solos, “Beneatn any Window,’’ “Sally Horner,” Miss Peggy Forsyth; elocutionary items, “The Bacheloi- and the Baby,” “Funny Phrases,” Mr. T. Tarrant. Two competitions were provided, being won byMiss N. Tennent and Mrs. O. Mclean respectively. Supper- was served by the ladies and dancing was indulged in until midnight, a very pleasant Ingleside concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
