BRIGANDS’ VICTIMS
DRAMA OF HIGHWAY ROBBERY.
PRAGUE, March 22
Four persons have lost their lives in a. drama of highway robbery more suggestive of a film scenario dated two centuries back than of modern Europe.
Three children of a wealthy farmer, Johann Horvath, with his coachman, fleeing from armed brigands last night galloped to their death in the waters of the Tarca, a mountain torrent.
Herr Horvath was returning in She carriage from a horse fair with his children and the coachman, carrying a large sum from the sale of horses. Near the village of Salanka masked brigands rode from a wood, halted the carriage, and ordered Horvath to hand over his money. As Horvath was taking out his purse, the coachman lashed the horses, which started away at a wild gallop, hotly pursued by the brigands firing revolvers The Tarca, usually a moderate stream, was swollen with the rains to a raging torrent, the terrified horses shied, and crashed with the carriage over the crags into the flood. Hosers, coachman, and children were swept away and drowned, Horvath alone reaching the bank. The bandits disappeared, leaving no trace. The police are now scouring the country for them.
