BRITISH RUGBY TEAM
CHOICE OF COLOURS.
[per PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, May 5.
A dark blue jersey, with three gold lions on the breast, and white shorts, will be the uniform worn by the' British Rugby team, that is due to arrive in Wellington on May 14. As the team includes players from all States that comprise Great Britain, it is possible that this colour has been chosen in preference to that of any of the individual countries of England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland. At the same time, the point arises that there will be some difficulty in distinguishing players in matches with the New Zealand team, whose uniform is all black jersey ornamented with a silver fern. Even more so will the difficulty arise in the Otago match, for Otago colours are also dark blue. It is understood that this was pointed out to the visitors, but dark blue was still chosen.
TRIAL MATCH.
THAMES, May 5.
The nominations for the Palmerston North trial match, Probables v. Possibles, from Thames, are those of the following: —A. R. Lomas (hooker),. • Strange (side row), and P. Clark (sice row).
FRENCH BRUTALITY.
YOUNG MAN’S DEATH.
[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
(Received May 6, 1 p.m.) PARIS, May 6.
“Promise me it is your last game, Madame Pradie beseeched her twenty-year-old son before he played in a Rugby game at Bordeaux. “They will kill you yet.” The same night Pradie died in his mother’s arms from spine injuries received in the game. During the game another player tried to strangle an opponent, and refusd to obey the refere, whom he kicked heavily in the thigh. Thirteen players were seriously hurt and were unable to leave the field unaid,ed. Jean Galie, hearing of Pradie’s death said: “I shall never play Rugby again.” The general feeling is that unless prompt and effective steps are taken, Rugby in France is doomed. Ribere, the French Rugby captain, said: “Many injuries are not due to accidents. Rugby is too brutal.”
