BRISBANE UNEMPLOYED

CLASH WITH POLICE.

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

BRISBANE, May 5.

A pitched battle in the streets of Brisbane to-day ended in the arrest of several of the unemployed. During the clashes, the police made many baton charges, while boots and fists were used by the rioters. The occasion was the Labour Day procession. The unemployed formed themselves into a separate camp, and they became disorderly. They carried offensive banners and shouted: “Kill the bosses’ army!” Their leaders also delivered fiery addresses in the vicinity of the Trades Flail.

The police tried to disperse them, and the melee ensued. Reinforcements of police arrived, and they arrested a number amid hooting and jeering. Nobody was seriously hurt.
