BRAVERY AWARDS

GOLD MEDAL FOR GIRL

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. The Royal Humane Society’s gold medal has been awarded to Miss Eila Munro, of Devonport, Auckland, who on February 23, at Muriwai Beach, North Auckland, rescued three persons from drowning. Three bathers were in difficulties off the beach, owing to the undertow, and Miss Munro brought all of them ashore, one by one. She was almost exhausted after the second rescue, but, undaunted, she swam out again, and brought in the other unconscious man. “This is a case of outstanding merit and worthy of the highest award we can give,” said the chairman, Mr. C. Morris, at the meeting to-day of the Court of Directors of the Royal Humane Society. Other awards were: — Bronze medal to Thomas Richards aged 29, for rescuing John W. Milligan from a scrub’ fire. Milligan died later from burns. Certificate to Frank Charles Little, aged 20, who tried unsuccessfully to rescue a man from the surf at Tokomaru Bay. Letters of commendation to Leslie P. Fox, Miramar, Wellington; and to Mrs. Doris J. Harris, of Devonport, Auckland, both for rescue from drowning.
