ECONOMIC PENSIONS
■—■■■ 1 1 COMMISSION’S RECOMMENDATION [FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 5. In reply to criticism of the Government for delay in giving information as to the report of the Royal Commission on Economic Pensions, Mr Cobbe, the Minister of Defence, states that in the first place, the report was held up pending his return from Samoa, where he represented the Govornmpnt
iiie government during the negotiations with the Mau. When he perused the document on his return, it was decided that, as the recommendations were of great importance, and would inyolve if carried out in their entirety, a large increase in expenditure, it should be considered by the Pensions Department and the Repatriation branch of the State Advances Department. The report has now been received back from those departments which have attached their opinion, and last week it was presented to the Governor-General for his signature, j Mr Cobbe is now awaiting the first opportunity of presenting the report to Cabinet, and as soon as this has been done, it will be released for publication. In reply to a question, the Minister stated that, except for one important recommendation, he did not think the report would necessitate the introduction of legislation.
