BLAZE AT SYDNEY
CITY SHOPS DESTROYED. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. April 1, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 1. A fire which broke out on the premises of Harris Bros., drapers, George Street, about 4 o’clock this morning, spread rapidly and endangered the large shopping blocks in George and Goulburn streets. Flames leapt high into the air. Firemen from every fire station were still fighting the flames at a late hour. LATER. Firemen from eight brigades effected a good save, assisted by the car parking area, which prevented the flames spreading along the block. Harris’s premises were destroyed and the adjoining shops suffered badly from water. The damage will run into many thousands of pounds.
