s'. AFRICAN BUDGET. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] CAPE TOWN, March 26. The Finance Minister, Mr Havenga, hopes to meet the balance of the deficit of £524,000 by rigid administrative economies. The wheat and flour duties are to be increased by six and eightpenece respectively, so as to enable South Africa to compete successfully against imports from Australia. The revenue for the coming year is expected to total £29,425,000. Though an imediate heavy reduction in the receipts from the diamond sources is inevitable, the Minister anticipates an early recovery as the result of the arrangements recently reached with the producers. WIRELESS TELEPHONY. ROME, March 26. An interesting disclosure has been made that after the “Electra” ceremony of putting on the lights at Sydney Radio Exhibition from the yacht, Marchess Marconi listened to wireless telephone experiments between Australia and Rugby, which were audible to everyone aboard the “Electra.” TEXTILE WORKERS. LONDON, March 27. The wool maufacturing employers announce that it is their intention to post notices of wage reductions, in accordance with Mr' MacMillan’s report. Mr Share, the Stcretary of the Operatives’ Union, says that they will resist the reduction, in accordance with their ballot decision. This will lead to a stoppage.
ITALIAN EXHIBITION. RUGBY, March 25. In recognition of the success of the exhibition of Italian art which has just concluded in London, the King has conferred the honorary Knighthood of the Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire upon the Italian Ambassador and honorary decorations upon the other Italians who have collaborated in the exhibition. BRITAIN AND EGYPT. RUGBY, March 27. Mr Henderson, accompanied by Sir Robert Vansittart, Permanent Under Secretary, and Sir Percy Loraine, High Commissioner in Egypt, this afternoon received at the Foreign Office, the Egyptian delegation consisting of Nahas Pasha, Prime Minister; Moharram Pasha, Minister of Public Works, and Makram Ebeid Effendi, Finance Minister. Arrangements were discussed for the public opening on Monday morning of the Conference which is to negotiate the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty. This ceremony, at which the Foreign Secretary and Nahas Pasha will speak, •will be held in the so-called Locarno room of the Foreign Office.
