The Canadian Government’s enaction of a now liquor clearance law may bring about the discard of order smuggling, as it is an important prohibition of smuggling in the opinion of U.S.A. Treasury officials, who said that while about the same Prohibition and Customs forces will be maintained on the border after the Bill’s passage until the actual effect is known, the officials anticipate a material reduction of the border personnel later, the agents being transferred from the border to other parts of the country, notably to Chicago and New York. The seagoing coastguard craft now on the Great Lakes would, the officials added, be then transferred to the North Atlantic rum blockade for, on theory that, as soon as one Prohibition problem has been solved, another springs up in its place, the officials anticipate that the Canadian rum smugglers will transfer their activities to the North Atlantic, with their headquarters at St. Pierre, Miquelon, and the Bahamas since Canadian liquor could be cleared legally thereto, and then reshipped to the United States.
