(Special to “Star.’’) CHRISTCHURCH, March 10. Those who fancied Rapier’s chance in his Wellington engagements got JJ set-back on Saturday as the result of his poor gallop with Count Cavoui. The pair set out from the nine furlong post on the plough, and were together at the end of half the-journey. Then Rapier unaccountably dropped ba , and finished quite a dozen lengths behind Count Cavour, who reeled off the journey in 1.56 3-5. It yas a nice effort on the part of the Count, but Rapier’s form is hard to understand, and if the gallop can be taken as a criterion, he has little chance at Wellington. Tt must not be forgotten, however, that he is an unreliable track worker. x _ Mr. Greenwood will be represented at Trenthapi by Jaloux, Swift Ray and Pride, who leave to-morrow in charge of P, Mason. The first-named pair may both be seen out in the St. Leger, while Pride’s mission is the Challenge Stakes. . Mason has his charges very well, but there has been nothing outstanding in their track efforts.

Tho slight mishap Waterline met with after the C.J.C. Meeting has not impaired his galloping ability, and he should certainly be the best of the local representatives for St. Leger honours. On Saturday, with the assistance of Full Feather for part of the journey, he left ten furlongs behind nicely in 2.12, a journey that took Jaloux 2.14 3-5.

Paquito is coming into increased favour for the Thompson Handicap, (aid on Saturday showed to advantage by reeling off a mile in 1.44 2-5.

"When going out to do a gallop on Saturday, Arikiwai and Dunraven got away from their riders, and galloped till exhausted before being caught. The experience is likely to unsettle the latter, who is of a rather nervous temperament.

Gay Sofmet has gone amiss, and will not be able to fulfil any of her immediate engagements. After getting through an easy task on Saturday, Aspiring, who had many friends for the Railway Handicap, was decidedly sore.

Hoylake, who looks in nice order, will not race till the second day of the Wellington meeting. The imported horse will be accompanied to Trentham. by Gay Crest and Adelphi, the former of whom looks like picking up a stake.

Neither Red Heckle nor Flair was asked to do much on Saturday morning. Both are in much better order than when they raced at Riccarton, and should be worth following at Trentham.

On the conclusion of the Wellington meeting, H. Cutts will take Waterline, Hurly Burly, and Full Feather on to Palmerston North. This course will also be followed by F. D. Jones with Paquito, Arikiwai and Dunraven. Should Rapier and Aspiring come out of their Trentham engagements satisfactorily, both may journey on to Awapuni. TRACK AND STABLE NOTES. Acceptances for the first day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting close this evening at 9 o’clock, with Mr. P. C. Heaphy, secretary of the Greymoutli [Trotting Club, or with Mr. E. R. Neale, the Nelson Club’s secretary. G. Burrows is reported to have Allanora in great form at his stables at Inangahua Junction. The Buller representative pacer,

Great Author, is on the front mark in the Wakefield Handicap next Monday, and as J. Jarden has him in rare fettle, he may be depended upon to make the others move. | The Pombal-Cowl yearling whicl i Miss Wilson purchased at the TrenItham sales, is now being ridden by a light boy at Reefton. He is a fine looking horse, and gives the impression that he will develop into a good one Baron Bingen, whom C. S. Donald drove to victory in the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday, and Cushla de Oro, on whom F. G. Holmes had an easy win by six lengths m the mile saddle event, are two Txniayu winners who are engaged to sport sin at Victoria Park next Monday and Tuesday. , x . I Among the horses engaged to race at New Brighton on Saturday, and in Greymouth on Monday and Tuesday, are Addie Guy, Fifa, Pointal, Last Pointer, Him, Prince Chimes, Sodium, Festival, Dusolina, Warrenore, Kate Logan, Repute, Venarc, Black Wattle, Kreisler, Baron Bingen and Mac de 01 A number of the horses with engagements at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting at Victoria Park on Monday and Tuesday next contested races at the Timaru meeting on Saturday, while a few of them will lace again at New Brighton on Saturday before being brought to the Coast. Eva Reta, who is listed for the Brightwater and President’s Handicaps on the first day, found few supporters in the Timaru Handicap, and her performance did not create a favourable impression. Another who gave a disappointing exhibition was Lingfield in the Timaru Cup, in which Talent was prominent throughout and finished fourth. Omaha, a candidate for the Kitchingham Handicap, was second choice in the Timaru Cup, and F. Holmes drove him a good third, three lengths from the winner. He paced very fast over the last half mile. In the Trial Handicap Warrenore finished fast in fine style, but was unplaced. C. S. Donald gained second money with Dim in the same race. Ulm is carded for New Brighton on Saturday and the Dominion 14£ furlongs event at Victoria Park on Monday. St. Petrox and Mac de Oro are two place-getters at Timaru who are handicapped for the Nelson meeting. The latter is also listed for New Brighton. J. J. Kennerley will bring Vendome and Black Wattle to the Coast to fulfil engagements next Monday and Tuesday. Arrangements have been made by Mr. P. C. Heaphy, secretary of the Greymouth Trotting Club, with Messrs. Newman Bros, for specially reduced fares for sportsmen from Westport attending the Nelson trots at Greymouth. The transport firm has agreed’ to reduce the fare to 30/-, and as the Pororari bridge is now finished it is expected that many will avail themselves of the opportunity of travelling over the Coastal Highway.

NELSON RE-HANDICAPS. Following upon their wins at the Timaru meeting, Mr. G. S. Simpson has re-handicapped Baron Bingen from scr. to 12yds. in the Wakefield Handicap ,and Cushla do Oro from 24yds. to 36yds. in the Dash Handicap on the first day of tho Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting.
