THE RACING REVIEWED. (Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, February 15. The Wellington Trotting Club held its one-day second Summer meeting at Petone on Saturday under miserable weather conditions. Regular showers at the opening of the day developed into steady rain by the time the third race \yas run, and the track became very slippery, militating against fast times. For the two last races the track was a quagmire. Ariki 'Toa led all the way in the February Handicap after a fast beginning, but had Wrackeen not lost her position three furlongs from home through interference she would have sent him along. Glenfossie, a three-year-old gelding by Match light—Harold Dillon mare, made no race of the Hutt Park Trial Handicap. He followed Driftwave for a mile, and once he took charge drew right away, winning easily from Bessie Huon and Brent Zolock at a gait over 15seconds better than he was handicapped to do. As a spectacle the race

was very poor, the field being well strung out towards the close. Sowerby, Direct Red and Marion De Oro lost their chances at the start, lhe winner is trained on the course bj L. O. Thomas. . J The defection of Writer from the Nail Nai Handicap left a one-dividended field. Boneta trotted faultlessly throughout to wind up an easy winner from Jock Bingen. Tamahine went away well, but broke with six furlongs to go, and finished last. Lady Tan and Dolores both faulted in the last halfmile. Boneta. is improving steadily with age and experience, and N. L. Price deserves credit for the patience he lias shown with a mare who has proved a handful. In a great betting race Great Logan and Wrackeen (£782-|) were the public selection for the February Handicap. From start to finish Ariki Toa was in the van, but the race nevei lacked interest. Ariki Toa began like a tradesman, something new for him, and when he reached two furlongs in 37 2-5 he was in command from Sonoma, Wrackeen. Jolly Pet, Great Logan and Real Light. Zella and Acre stopped on the mark, and were at the tail, of the field throughout. At half a mile left behind in 1.13 2-5 Ariki Toa was showing the way to Sonoma, and except that Wrackeen had been displaced by Jolly Pet, there was no change in. the order when Ariki Toa reached the mile and a-quarter in 2.54 4-5. He had as his nearest attendants Real Light, Jolly Pet, Great Logan, Wrackeen and Sonoma. Into the back Ariki Toa. was still going well, but after he gathered a mile and ahalf in 3.30 Great Logan ran up to him only to be disposed of inside the next furlong. It was at this stage that Sonoma, who was racing in front of Wrackeen, broke and stopped her, this costing the Wrack filly fully 12yds and her position, which probably cost her the race. Ariki Toa clapped on the pace over the last half, reaching a 2.8 clip to beat the fast finishing Real Light by a short length. Great Logan was only a head away, another a head in front of Wrackeen who made a big effort in the lane. Jolly Pet was just in front of Sonoma. The winner returned with laurels as he made all his pace and then outstayed the others. Wrackeen was very unlucky. \ Native Hero made no race of the Railway Handicap until 100 yards off the post, where he was strongly challenged by Sandy Pointer. He hung on gamely, however, to gain a narrow verdict. Baron Bingen finished on much better than Nelsonian to take third place. Soon after the start Salient broke and Glenlake followed suit, the former recovered, but although he got up to third place for the run home he faded out. Glenlake was last throughput after his mistake, and Halmoreleft iiis feet to drop out of the proceedings in the first five furlongs. The track got to tile bottom of several horses. Native Hero found conditions to his liking, as he is locally trained by N. I). (Jlutterbuick.

On the strength of his performance at the last Wellington Meeting, Petronius was elected a warm favourite for the Sharpe Handicap. The going was all against many of the runners, but the favourite was one that handled it to perfection, and after disposing of Hardiness, Brent Light and Bessie Huon three furlongs from home he lasted out long enough to heat the fast finishing Lady Author by a short length. ' Bessie Huon did better than Alexis ami Hardiness in the stretch, aiid ended up a close third. Glenlake, wlto started in the previous race, when forging to the front passing the stand the first time broke and did not gather any speed after . losing his position. Petronius, who is trained by Drum Withers, was accorded a round of applause on returning. He is a halfbrother to Onyx. Jock Bingen, who was made a hot favourite for the Wilford Handicap, failed to stay on in the mud and was beaten out of sight in the run to the Judge. Miss Leda made most of the place, and after retiring apparently beaten three furlongs from home she came again and outstayed Jock Bingen for third. Writer trotted splendidly m the heavy stuff, quite confounding the opinion that he would not handle the going, and once in. line for home nothing could touch him for speed. Quickfire put in a couple of breaks and then finished fast in second place. Tamahine did not see out the journey and Boneta lost her chance at the start. The track was a sea of slush when starting time came for the Middle Class Handicap. Salient, the outsider of the field, revelled in the going and drew right away from Nelsonian, Wakefield, Lydia, Sandy Pointer and El Direct at two furlongs, to score a four lengths’ victory. Lydia, who broke twice in the last half mile, came from last to second in the concluding quarter, and on a dry track would in all probability have ' won easily. Denver City broke badly with six furlongs to go. Wilma. Dillon and Ariki Toa had the Electric Handicap to themselves. They changed positions three times, but Arikfl’oa stayed best in the quagmire and heat Wilma Dillon easily by four lengths. There was a big gap to Logan Princess, the favourite. WOODVILLE REHANDICAPS. WELLINGTON, February 17. The following rehandicaps have been declared for the Woodville Races: —County Handicap: Limosin 9.3; Sapling Stakes: Autopay 8.5; Victoria Hack Cup, Dolomite 9.3. Omissions from the Woodville acceptances as published on Saturday were Tar Baby from the Sapling Stakes, and Dainty Ways and Good Acre from the County Handicap.

TRACK AND STABLE NOTES. An addition to'th? trotting hrigad© on the West Coast will be a colt by Great Audubon— Lady Rothesay, whiri Mr. F. Scott has bought from Mi. son, -of Halswe'll. liv Goldbag, a 5-year-old gelding by Gasbag-Bradamante, has chased by Mrs. W. Monteith, and ai rives in Greymoutli on Wednesday to go into Donnellan and | stable. In December, while on the Wellington—Hawkes Bay circuit, Gold bag won the Wliariti Hack Handicap, over a mile and a distance ,at M ooclville, and got a third placing on the second day at the same meeting. Last season he won the Railway Handicap, of six furlongs, at Waipawa, and a. six furlongs event at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. As a three-year-olct Goldbag won the Waiata Stakes at Feilding and the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke s Bay autumn meeting. Glenrossie, winner of the Hutt Park Trial Handicap on Saturday, is a tliree-ycar-old by Matchliglit from a Harold billon mare. He raced at the meeting of tho Wellington Trotting Club last month, and theji gave the impression that he was a useful sort, likely to improve in the care of L. O. Thomas.

Mr J. R. Corrigan has donated a handsome silver cup for the winner of the Corrigan Handicap at the Nelson Trotting meeting to be held here on March 17 and 18. Tho manner in which Topere downed the field by a length and a half in the President’s Handicap on the first day at Wingatui, and paid over a doublefigure dividend, had a big bearing on tho betting on Saturday. _ Topere advanced from seventh ravouirte in a field of ten to second favourite in the event he won on second day. Some Coasters who remembered tho way he raced at Omoto were not displeased with the further successes achieved.

Amor was a rank outsider when he ran third in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap on Saturday. The Archery gelding has been racing well-up without filling better than third berths, but when he does win he may not warrant being classed as a surprise winner. His turn is overdue.

Saturday’s racing made no altera-i tion on the upper rungs of the ladder of winning jockeys, at the top of which is H. Goldfinch with 38 wins. At the same time it reduced Goldfinch’s lead. A double win on Cimabue and one on Ruanui at the Wanganui meeting places B. H. Morirs as runner-up with 33. Five successes by E. A. Keesing at the Poverty Bay meeting retains him as third with 32, while Hector Gray, who did not pilot a winner on Saturday, is fourth with 29 wins. The American-bred pacer Royal Iroquois, of whose future R. B. Plaxico thought a. lot, has not progressed as much as was hoped. He does not stay well, and was little fancied in the Sharpe Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday, when he did not figure prominently. Gayoma, who with 9.7 to carry and the Southland Jockey A. E. Ellis in the saddle, established a track record at Wingatui for a mile and a half hurdle face, is a 5-year-old gelding from Naomi by Gay Lad. On January 3, at the Southland meeting, he won the Gladstone Hurdles over a mile and three-quarters. Gayoma’s record time is 2.47. Last year Troilus, with 10.11 up, won the event in 2.49 4-5.

J. T. Andrews had winning mounts on Rin ’Pin Tin in the Flying and on Charmaino in the Hopeful Stakes at tko D.J.C. meeting on Saturday, thus bringing his successes this season to half a dozen. He was the only rider at that meeting on Saturday to be first to salute the judge on two occasions. The Auckland sportsman, Mr. Wenzl Scholium, had a successful trip to the Poverty Bay meeting, as St. Amos won for him each day, and E. A. Keesing rode Little Gift, Helius and White Wings to pick up the big end of the stakes.
