COBDEN PICNIC
RESULTS OF SPORTS. (Our Own Correspondent). The annual Cobden District Picnic was held on Saturday last under ideal conditions. Nearly 600 parents and children attended, the change of venue —to Hokitika—proving very popular. An energetic committee had all details well arranged, and Mr J. Scorgie was an ideal secretary. Plentiful supplies of fruit and lollies made the juveniles happy, and every child under the age of fourteen received a silver coin. The return journey was made in smart time, a tired but happy party reaching Greymouth just before 8 o’clock. The following were the sporting results:— Infants (first year) —Girls : F. McIntyre 1, I. During a. lull in operations the gangway was swung down well over the deep face of auriferous deposit, enabling a landing on the dredge, where the treating of the wash-dirt was explained by I the workmen. The travelling elevator iu the rear disposed of tailings of tremendous boulders \vith apparent ease. The sand passed through the revolving screen and over ample spread of tables flushed with water, provision being made for catching the gold. The darn is amply supplied with water; the face exposed looks hkely country, and the area denuded of forest, even to a road, presages a long life for this American venture. A new road has been made over the tailings at the rear of the dredge to replace tl;at dredged away—a small matter where upwards of 500ozs of gold is. the wekly return.
