(Per Preaa Association.) A LONELY DEATH. INVERCARGILL, February 14. John Beer, aged 70, single, who lived at Te Anau, was found dead in Iris hut this afternoon. In view of the fact that he had been in ill health for some time, an inquest may not be necessary. SAMOAN POLICE FORCE. WELLINGTON, February 14. About fifty recruits for the Samoa Military Police Force, from the Southern and Central Commands, left fori Trentham this jnorning, to undergo training, in case it is necessary to send a detachment. A contingent of eighty from Auckland are due at 3 o’clock, and it is expected that by to-night practically the full quota of 250 called up will be at Trentham. Major Weir is the officer commanding. ESCAPEE CAPTURED. FEILDING, February 14. Randall James Ferguson, an escapee from Weraroa State Farm, was (arrested to-day and charged with the theft of a horse and other alleged crimes. He was remanded to appear before the S.M. next week. Sergeant Cahill informed the Court that Ferguson, who is 17 years old, had made a statement to the police that he had escaped from the State Farm and stole clothes, food, etc. He had got rides in cars to Wellington and back, and had obtained clothes in ■Feilding to ride out into the country. He was captured by Constable Rud. dell. CROSSING COLLISION. CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. Serious injuries were sustained by Robert Breeze, driver, and a horse and gig, when his vehicle was struck by a train at a level crossing at Templeton this evening. Breeze was taken to the hospital, his condition being critical. The train was a special goods from Culverden to Christchurch. Apparently Breeze did not see it as he approached the crossing. The engine struck the vehicle on the wheel, and swept it over the cattle stops, down a distance of 30 yards. Breeze was carried with it some distance, and then thrown clear of the rails. He suffered severe injuries to the head and body. SUPERANNUATION BOARD. WELLINGTON, February 14. The Public Service Superannuation Board held its quarterly meeting in Wellington on Thursday, Mr. J. W. MacDonald presiding. Twenty-five contributors, who had retired by reason of age or length of service, were granted allowances totalling £6063 per annum, and four contributors retired ’as medically unfit, <ero granted allowances totalling£s2B per annum. An application for an additional allowance on account of retirement, through injuries received whilst on police duty, was refused. Fifteen widows and five children were granted the statutory allowances amounting to £595 per annum. Several applications foi* the inclusion of broken service for superannuation were dealt with, and committees were appointed for the ensuing year. LIQUOR IN ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, February 14. At the Magistrate’s Court, three .men appeared on charges in connection with illegal sale of liquor. Roland T. Bailey, for selling without a license, was fined £lO. Frederick Charles Price was fined £lO on a similar charge. Nelson Raynor Bushell and Price were jointly charged with being parties, as the occupiers of the premises. The former was fined £35, and the latter £25. The defence was that the accused were agents for a brewery, and were not aware that it was a breach of the act to hand liquor to purchasers. The agency was conducted in conjunction with a tobacconist’s business. William Ernest Clements was fined £lO and delicensed for one year for being drunk in a car.
