LAMB STEAMSHIPS
ACQUIRED BY U.S.S. CO. Official advice was received at Greymouth to-day by Mr J. S. Robertson, agent for the Lamb Shipping Co., of Australia, to the effect that the firm is giving up its shipping business, and that the Union Steam Ship Company Ltd., of New Zealand, has purchased the steamers. The vessels involved in this big deal are the Gabriella, which has already changed hands; the Kalingo, which will make her last visit under the Lamb flag to Greymouth next week; the Omana, and the new steamer, the Ihumata, due to arrive in Australia on her maiden voyage next month. The three older vessels are all well known at Greymouth as timber-carriers between New Zealand and Australia, and the Omana holds the port record for the largest outward cargo, 4500 tons. KAITANGATA AND KAIAPOI. WELLINGTON, February 13. Late yesterday afternoon, the Union Company’s old cargo steamers Kaitangata and Kaiapoi, having been handed over to the Williamson Coy., Hong Kong, left to bunker at Westport, after which they will lift cargo at Rabaul for their new owners. Captains Haughton and Wilkins, both of whom have considerable experience in China seas, have command respectively, and the other officers and engineers were all enlisted in New Zealand.
