HOKITIKA, January 20.
The alarm of fire was given about 2 o’clock on Sunday morning, the cause being a small shed on the beach opposite Camp Street. Yesterday afternoon was exceptionally boisterous. High winds and heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning kept people indoors. Water channels were flooded in a very short time. The Westjand Competitions Society have made some alterations in the proposed programme for the competitions which ar© to take place this year
in May. A lady’s solo (open) own selection, and a national song (own selection) has been added. A fourpart glee has been added for the choir test. Additional classes for piano solo ‘and duet and violin solo (own selection) have been put in, and the classes 'for choral singing and action chorus have been definitely fixed for pupils Attending competing schools. A bursary of £5 is to be awarded in the ■juvenile instrumental section to the pupil showing the greatest progress. The death took place at Kanieri on Saturday’morning of Mrs Baucke, wife 'of Mr. F. Baucke. Deceased was 75 •'years of age and a native of Wicklow, having spent 57 years in New 'Zealand. She leaves a husband and an adopted daughter. ,
