MOTOR-RACING “TOTE”

AUCKLAND CLERGY OPPOSE.

(Special to “Star.”)

AUCKLAND, November 28.

Beyond the fact that it was decided, at the meeting of the Auckland Automobile Racing Club Limited to apply for permission to instal a totalisatbr at Henning’s Speedway at Mangere, nobody seems to know very much about the'proposal. The opinion is expressed that the club is “flying a kite.” Auckland clergymen appear to be unanimous in condemning any suggestion of offering facilities to people to bet on motor racing, and at the first sign of an application being given serious consideration they will rise and vigorously oppose it. The Rev. Jasper Calder was easily the most outspoken. “I have been associated with sport all my life,’ he said, “and I have no hesitation in saying that there are top many tote permits now. The only way to keep sport clean is to cut out betting. The cleanest sports to-day are tennis, cricket and yachting. If you want my straightout opinion, I say, ‘To hell with the tote!’ For the sake of everyone, let us keep our sport clean.”
