WHITE RHINOCEROS
A ZULULAND CENSUS.
That the white rhinoceros is by no means near extinction appears to be proved by a report submitted to the Natal Game Protection Committee by ;Mr. Harris, the entomologist in charge of the operations carried out in Zuluiland for the extirpation of the tsetse fly, the carrier of the germs of the disease in cattle known as nagana. Mr. Harris, in his report, states that his preliminary operations involved the reduction of the commoner game outside the reserves and driving the balance into those areas, and also a survey of the Umfolozi game reserve find the animals at present in it. Up to the present the number -of white rhinoceros in the reserve had been estimated at a maximum of forty, but as a result of his survey Mr Harris is satisfied that over 150 specimens exist, the ranger and the native game guards having (taunted seventy-five males and eighty-two females, as well as halfgrown animals 4 and calves. Thirtyfour were seen in one day, and many of the animals were counted while sleeping or wallowing, quite unaware of the proximity of man 1
