Mi' W. Starkey, whilst following his employment in the Middle-brake colliery, Rewanui, met with an injury to his eye. Weather improvements during the week-end, allowed the bowlers to get started with their competition, play being continued until darkness set in. The Borough Council have improved the local domain to a standard which will allow the local sports bodies to have their games during the next football season. The children’s park has been planted with a number of young trees which greatly improves the outlook. Briandale colliery resumed work yesterday (Monday) after being off since last Tuesday, owing to the bridge across the creek being repaired, necessary through the recent flood. The .-Tennis Club Bazaar held recently, was a decided success, and the committee are proceeding with the laying out of the new court, which is expected to be finished early in the New Year. The’ committee are also trying to arrange fixtures with other clubs.

A great number other than Scotch visited Greymouth for the Bag-pipe contest on Saturday, and all express themselves that the marching, and the playing of Hielan’ Laddie by the massed bands was a treat to watch and listen to.

A number of local residents contemplate spending their Christmas holidays at Auckland this year. The Underviewers and Deputies examination takes place to-day. The following are sitting from Runanga for Un&erviewers: —Messrs L. Cooke, W. Farnworth, R. Barber, W. Barlow; and for Deputies, Messrs J. Simpson, R. Smithereens. The hockey girls held a successful concert in the Miners’ Hall on Friday night. It is intended to take all the artists to Brunner and hold a concert in the Wallsend Hall on Friday night.
