A Washington cablegram the death of Senator Francis Marren, aged 88. He was the last survivor in Congress of the Civil War.

Mesdames F. M. Dennehy, F. H- Denton and- J. O’Brien left this morning to attend a conference of Plunket Society delegates at Christchurch.

It is officially announced that Wall Khan, brother of Nadir Khan, King o Afghanistan, r has been appointed Afghan Minister in London. He is expected to arrive in England shortly.

The death is announced from Auck-land-of the Rev. E. C. Budd, who for more than 21 years acted as Cffiiplai to Mount Eden Prison, Auckland Hospital and Mental Hospital. Press Assn.

Professor W. Hewitson, Moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly of New Zealand who has been visiting tle West Coast, returned this morning to Christchurch. He was accompanied by Mrs Hewitson.

Druidic circles in New Zealand are concerned as a result of the resignation of the grand secretary, Bro. J. N Grant. Mr. Grant has been connected with the Order as grand secretary for a period of 23 years, and is well known to the Friendly Society movement throughout the Dominion.

The ceremony of calling within the Bar the Hon. T. M. Wilford on Jiis receiving letters patent as King’s Counsel, took place at the Supreme Court at Wellington to-day. Chief Justice Myers said that he recognised the appointment of Mr Wilford as High. Commissioner prevented his commencing to exercise the privileges conferred at once, but they hoped to see him back* in his place, and that he would have many years’ enjoyment in active practice of the honour patent conferred on him. —Press Assn.

The death took place yesterday at the Reefton Hospital of Mr. James Patrick Doolan, of Totara Flat. Deceased was a native of the Flat, and was well known on the West Coast. He leaves a widow and a family of eight—three daughters (Mary, Ellen and Kathleen) and five sons (John, James, Joseph, Frail cis and Patrick). Mrs .McGill, of Auckland, is a sister. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving the Catholic Church, Totara Flat, at 9.30 a.m., for the Ahaura cemetery.

The death of Mi’s Robert Meharry, of Upper Kokatahi, took place on Sunday after a short illness. The deceased was a native of County Down, Ireland, 75 years of age. She was one of the earliest pioneers of the district, and was tlie first school teacher .in that locality. Deceased leaves a husband, who is a member of the Westland Hospital Board. There are three daughters (Mrs M„ Elhinney, of Ashburton, Mrs T. R. Chesterman, of Kanieri, and Mrs T. Crough, of Kokatahi), and four sons (James, of Kokatahi, Robert, of Hawera, David, of Auckland, and Henry, of South Westland).

Mr J. C. Leitch, B.Sc., B.E. ,A.0.5.M., at present Lubricating Engineer in Canterbury and Westland for the acuum Oil Company Proprietary, Ltd., has been promoted to the managership of the company’s lubricating and technical branches in Victoria, and will leave for Melbourne next week. Mr Leitch is a past-president of the Otago University Association, and also of the Knox College (Dunedin) Students’ Club. He was manager of the New Zealand University Rugby team which visited Sydney in 1923. He received his primary education at Blackball, where his father was manager of the Blackball mine. He is a nephew of Mr J. R. Leitch, of Greymouth.

Mr J. H. Lascelles, Head Prefect at Christ’s College, has been awarded a grant of £250 annually for three years from the 'Rhodes Scholarship Trust to enable him to study at Oxford. This grant, it is explained, has been given as a mark of appreciation of the services rendered by his father, LieutColonel E. W. Lascelles, in connection with the Overseas Soldiers and Sailors Scholarship Fund. Mr Lascelles, Jun, has also had a good record at Christ’s College, having won the Junior University Scholarship for the past three years, but having on each occasion declined the scholarship, which is tenable only at a New Zealand university college. Mr Lascelles was going to England in any case. He now will probably enter. Oxford next year.— Press Assn. . .
