POST OFFICE MISHAP
LADDER FALLS TO FOOTPATH.
Rain was not the only thing that fell at Greymouth to-day. A heavy ladder, supposedly dislodged by a strong gust of wind, dropped from the scaffolding on the newly-erected portion of the Post Office./ and landed with a crash on the footpath. Two citizens, the Rev. T. N. Cuttie and Mr R. Tennent, narrowly escaped serious or fatal injuries, while onlookers received a thrill. , The ladder landed on its end with sufficient force to smash off its top portion, making contact with the footpath outside the box lobby, only a foot behind the spot where Messrs 1 Cuttie and Tennent were standing.' An eye-witness stated that it was one of the narrowest escapes he had ever seen from a serious accident. Mr Cuttie stated that he heard a report like a gunshot just behind him, and did not know how Mr Tennent and himself escaped being struck. Another few inches would have' made all the difference.
