SALVATION ARMY
N.Z.’s NEW COMMANDER. (By Cable—Press Assn.-Copyright.) SYDNEY, November 7. Sparely built, six feet in height, sharp features, penetrating eyes, and with a small/ well trimmed beard, Commissioner Cunningham, who takes control of the Salvation Army activities in the Dominion, was given a reception along with members of his family by the Headquarters staff of the Army in Sydney to-night. The gathering was very large and cordial. Commissioner Cunningham gave an address on the Army’s mission work among lepers in Dutch East Indies, and later delivered a spiritual address, which is described as one of the most eloquent and earnest ever* heard in this city. Mrs Cunningham, their two daughters and son were present. A native of Scotland, Commissioner Cunningham is nearing his sixtieth year, but withal is an extremely alert and striking figure. He looks much younger. ' Interviewed, he stated that he was - 'looking forward with real pleasure and joy to settling down in New Zealand. His interest for the Dominion began forty year's ago. He intended to do his utmost to develop the Army’s work there, and if possible to extend the sphere of its usefulness. Commissioner Cunningham is a much-travelled man, and has held high and influential posts in the Army’s organisation. Mrs Cunningham is a native of South Africa. The party sails for New Zealand to-morrow.
