Completely disabled, through the loss of her propeller, the Northern Steamship Company’s steamer, “Apanui,” anchored off Tiri Island at an early hour this morning and radioed for assistance. The tug Kumea was sent, and towed her back to port. The Apanui left at midnight for the Great Barrier, and a little over two hours later, when just clear of Tiri, the mishap occurred. There was a thud and a shock, which suggested that her propeller had caught some floating object. The vessel dropped anchor, and rode easily to a light south-east wind on a quiet sea. The radio message for help was picked up at Tiri, and sent on.

The Apanui was berthed at noon, and later shifted to the slip to have another propeller fitted. She is expected to be ready for sea to-morrow.
