MEETINGS
W.E.A. The interest by the circle studying drama and opera under the auspices of the Workers’ Educational Association is being steadily maintained, sixteen members as well as a few visitors attending the meeting on Thursday at the Greymouth Main School. The topic of study, of which the leader was Mr H. Haigh, was the History of Drama, with typical readings from plays ranging in time from the tenth century to the present day. The occasion of the performance of the great Greek plays in honour of Dionysius when dance, acting, music, speech, religious service and entertainment contributed to make an organic whole was explained in the notes sent by the College, as well as the purpose of the Greek masks worn by the actors to enable the voice to carry in the vast open air amphitheatres. Readings were made from an Easter play of the year 967, the mystery play, “Everyman,” Ben Jonson’s, “Every Man in His Humour,” Sheridan’s “The Rivals,” and Pinero’s “Sweet Lavender.” On Thursday, October 31, Mr J.
