SOCCER FOOTBALL

BULLER v. WESTLAND. (Special to ‘‘Star.") Played at Victoria Park, Westport The teams were: —

Buller—Archibald, Beattie, Tichard Queen, Newman, Graham, White, Or man, Blyth.e, Trotter, Scott.

Westland. —Timlin, Marley, Moor, Marshall, Berry, Cowe, Hewison, Wilson, King, McNeil, Swinley. Referee: Mr W. Shearer. Berry won the toss and sent the homesters in to face a glaring sun. Blythe kicked off, and Scott receivingpossession sped down the wing and Marley cleared. Tichard sent to touch. Midfield play followed. McNeil, sent Swinley away on the left and failing to gather the ball sent past Blythe and

Orman came into the picture, and Chings looked dangerous for Coast until Wilson stepped in and cleared. Back came Buller, but Moor punted well down to McNeil, who tested Archibald, next minute Swinley sent erratically past when in a good position. Blythe

tested Timlin at the other end, and Marley headed and cleared. King at the other headed past. Buller were sending into touch at every opportunity and the game at this stage was lacking in interest. Trotter sent Scott away on the left, and with a rocket drive tested Timlin. Buller pressed and Cowe cleared. Back came Westland, and Wilson struck the upright with Archibald well beaten. Wilson next forced a corner from Newman; Hewison sent past. Buller now took up the offensive and Orman was left with an open goal, but sent past. A foul against Orman saw play transferred to the other end, and Beattie conceded a corner. End-to-end play followed with Buller having the best of the play until Newman sent past. Tichard sent Scott away on the left, and sent well over into the centre. Orman, who was in a handy position to score, failed to net. Westland were lucky not to be in arrears, as Orman had missed two open goals in five minutes. McNeil sent to Swinley and Queen cleared. Back came Westland and King sent past. Trbtter at the other end sent the ball over the bar after a good run by Scott. A foul against King followed and play was confined to midfield for a spell until Westland broke away on the right, and after 43 minutes.’ play Wilson lobbed the ball into the net well out of Archibald’s reach. Westland hemmed Buller into their own territory, and half-time came with Westland being lucky to be in the lead. Westland 1, Buller 0.

SECOND HALF

End-to-end play marked the resumption, each goal being visited in turn. White sent past when it would have been better for him to have crossed. The next minute saw McNeil at the other end send in a good shot which went wide. Newman who was. breaking up the Westland attacks time and again was not placing the ball to the best advantage, and was overkicking his forwards. Hewison got away on the right and Tichard put past for a corner. Tichard cleared and sent well down to Blythe, passed to Scott and over-anxiousness on his part made him overrun the ball when lying unmarked. The spectators were being treated with fast end-to-end play. Orman tested Timlin, and Cowe cleared to Hewison, the ball going into-touch. Buller forwards were trying too much on their own and were lacking in combination, with the result that Westland halfbacks held them easily. Still, individually They kept the Westland defence on the stretch, and Blythe forced a corner from Marley, which Orman sent past. Newman next tested Timlin from ithirty yards. King sent to Hewison, Tichard cleared and Blythe sent weakly past at the other end. Westland got well away and Wilson was well set for going through when Beattie stepped in and cleared. Next minute Hewison sent past. Beattie spoiled a good movement by beating McNeil, . and Swinley in turn. Buller pressed and Timlin cleared. Hewison gave to Wilson and Beattie gave away a foul. A corner followed to Westland, which proved fruitless, Newman clearing. Scott allowed the ball to go into touch. Queen sent past. Buller had now the best of the play but they concentrated

their attack on the right which was being held rather easily as Timlin was not being troubled at this stage. Newman sent the ball over to the left. Trotter tried to round Marshall, but fell over his leg, the referee granting to Buller a very soft penalty. Tichard took the kick and Timlin saved miraculously. Buller continued to press and Timlin’s charge had many narrow escapes. Cowe sent to Swinley on the left, and King being offside spoiled a likely movement. Blythe sent over the bar, a corner followed which was cleared, but Scott who had gone away to the other side of the field had a great shot, which went past Timlin after 92 minutes’ play. No further scoring took place, and two minutes later time came with the scores being: — Buller, 1; Westland, 1.

It was a good hard game, and a draw was a good result. Buller on the play would have been unlucky to have lost the shield, still at the end of ninety I minutes they were one goal behind, and Westland consider they were unfortunate , as the goal scored against them came after the extra four minutes, otherwise the refereeing was faultless. Timlin had more to do than Archibald, Graham at left half was the weak spot in the Buller defeuce. Of the forwards, Blythe was the best. Orman was the greatest sinner, as on two occasions he sent past an empty goal. At half-time Buller were unlucky to be in arrears. All Westland defence played well. Of the forwards, only Wilson and McNeil played anything like their usual game. Still at times they were found to be lying too far back, when if they had been up to take play into the enemy’s . camp another goal might have come their way. Westland Will have to find new forwards for the next match. SCHOOL MATCHES

The Runanga State v. Blackball schoolboys team met at Dobson on Saturday in a primary schools senior encounter. Interest was aroused owing to both .teams having an unbeaten certificate. The Blackball team did the major portion of the attacking throughout the game, but Speakman, the Runanga custodian was quite safe, saving twice from Vaughan and again from Hogg in quick succession. The interval arriving. with a blank score sheet. After about 15 minutes of the second half had elapsed a neat movement by Balderstone, Hogg, Vaughan I and Anderson saw the latter run in | and give Speakman no chance with al

I fast grounder into the left hand corner of the net, greatly to the jubilation of the Blackball supporters. Runanga forwards headed by White essayed to get. away on several occasions, but Caldwell (who played a great full-back game), ably assisted by Ashurst, McNaughton and Balderstone, continually drove them back. Mossop, Pattinson and White played well for Runanga.
