FEDERAL BY-ELECTION MELBOURNE, August 3. The Balaclava by-election to fill Mr Watt’s seat in the‘House of Representatives resulted.’ in a victory for .Mr T. W. White, the .endorsed Nationalist.
HARBOUR FOG-BOUND. SYDNEY, August 3.
The densest fog of the year enveloped the Harbour this morning, and although there were many near collisions, no mishaps were reported. Some of the ferry services were suspended for several hours.
COMEDIAN’S SUICIDE. SYDNEY, August 4. The comedian, Jack Cannot, according to a letter he wrote to the Actors Federations, expressed great worry owing to financial difficulties, and. his inability to secure remunerative employment, because of the popularity of the talkies. He leaves a widow and two children. COAL MINES DISPUTE. SYDNEY, August 5. The State Council of Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen again agreed that immediate steps should be taken to end the coal dispute. Members took the stand that negotiations should be opened with colliery owners, and the Unions should be prepared to compromise. CRANE TRAGEDY. SYDNEY, August 4. When a crane collapsed at the Temperance and General Insurance Company’s new building on Saturday, Douglas ■ Canning crashed with it 150 feet to the Elizabeth Street tram line, and was killed. His body and features were mutilated beyond recognition. Hundreds of pedestrians were horrified and fled in all directions. POTATO EMBARGO. SYDNEY, August 3. The Housewives’ Association here received a cablegram from the New Zealand Agricultural Department, as follows: —“Disease in potato crop normal, not serious. Any shipment to Australia would be subject to careful inspection.” The housewives are consequently pressing for the lifting of the embargo.
