S. AFRICANS COLLAPSE

INNINGS DEFEAT IN SIGHT FREEMAN BOWLS WELL (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (By Cable —Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Recd. July 30, 1 p.m.) LONDON, July 29. Twenty-four hours of rain left the pitch wet, and it began to cut up early in the test cricket between England and South Africa. England declared at Saturday’s total of 437 for 7. Bowling: Morkel 1 for 61, Quinn 2 for 95, Bell 1 for 113, Vincent 2 for 93, Mitchell 1 for 21, Owen-Smith 0 for 16. England’s bowlers bowled leg breaks, and the South Africans persistently tried to get the ball to leg, often with disastrous results. Catterall banged a long hop into Sutcliffe’s hands at deep leg. Freeman was the first change, mixing occasional googley with leg breaks, he often raised a laugh at the batsmen’s expense, but the leg breaks did damage. Mitchell gave Geary an easy catch at the boundary. Taylor alone tried to drive Freeman. ■

Deane quite failed to manage Freeman’s breaks. He played forward and tipped a ball to Duckworth, who almost ran him out. Deane, playing a similar shot, missed the next altogether, and was stumped. ■ Taylor jumped out to smother a a break, but missed, and was bowled. Morkel fared better at the same game and confidently ‘left the crease jumping in to Freeman, nevertheless his batting was mostly defensive. Vincent in trying a big leg- hit was easily taken. Morkel hit eight fours. The South Africans’ innings lasted 185 minutes. South Africa in the second innings batted 55 minutes. They scored three runs off seven overs, then they lost Seidle and Catterall in successive overs for the same score. Carr missed Taylor when two.
