HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, July 30. The news of the sudden death at Westport on Sunday morning of Mr. Dennis O’Sullivan was received with surprise and shock to many here. He had on the previous day been conversing b ytelephone to Mr H. M. Coulson and concluded by saying he had a bad ,<?old and was then going to bed. The cause of death was bronchitis. Mr. O’Sullivan was foreman linesman and resided here for some time prior to being transferred to Palmerston North, and was sent to Westport after the severe earthquake to, assist in repairing the lines, and had done wonderful work in that respect, and the laying of new routes. Deceased was .52 years of age and leaves a widow, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Alex Bock, of Hokitika, and family of two besides his mother and two brothers, of Taranaki. The body is being brought to Hokitika "or interment, which will take place to norrow. The death of Mr. Jam. 3 Meharry, of Upper Kokatahi, on Sui lay, removes another of the pioneers < : the district. Deceased was a nativ of County Down, Ireland, and 77 J >,ars of age. He has been 50 years in New Zealand of which nearly all were passed at Kokatahi. He leaves a family of two sons, his wife having predeceased him four years ago. Mr. Robert Meharry is a brother of the deceased. The death took place at the Arahura pa on Sunday of Eli Tuhuru, a lad of about 15 years of age. He has been in indifferent health for some time. Influenza shows no signs of abating and several severe cases are reported. Children, more particularly, are victims.
