STOREKEEPER PUNISHED
INTENT TO EXTORT MONEY.
BRISBANE, May 24.
In the Criminal Court, before Mr. Justice Webb, Charles J. Robinson, storekeeper, was charged with threatening to publish certain matter concerning H. Jones and Co. Proprietary, jam manufacturers, namely, that a certain tin of jam contained beetles, with intent to extort money. No evidence was given for the defence.
The jury found ■ the defendant guilty, with a very strong recommendation to mercy on account of the method used in tempting him to commit himself.
Mr. Justice Webb said he took a veiy serious view of the offence, and the company should be commended on its action in bringing the defendant to justice. He imposed a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment, but suspended it on condition that Robinson entered into his recognisances in £lOO to be of good behaviour for a year.
