FOOTBALL HYMN-SINGING
ALMOST BLASPHEM.Y SAYS VICAR
Should hymns be sung at football matches?
The Rev. D. J. Jones, vicar of Blaenavon, says they should not be, but football enthusiasts in Monmouthshire, who are supported by a number of clergymen, say that they should. Mi- Jones, speaking at Abersychan, near Pontypool, said it was almost blasphemy. When singing a hymn, one should be thinking of Go,d, and not of the football team that was about to enter the field. Welsh football crowds are, very fond of singing hymns, and one minister said sometimes one man sang national hymns, and another drank out of beer bottles, and swore. Mr W. R. Meredith, secretary of the Pontypool R.F.C., condemned the attack as narrow-mindedness, and said that the very best type of Welshman at - football matches sang from his heart, and not blasphemously.
