HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent.'.) HOKITIKA, May 11. Th© Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and Crs A. R. Elcock, J? King, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, J. L. Turner, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, and E. Teichelmaim. The Mayor extended a welcome to Cr Turner to the Council table, and on the motion of Cr Evans, it was resolved to record on the minutes the Council’s appreciation of the work done by Mr W. Jeffries during the several years he sat on the Council. On the motion of Cr Kang, Cr Evans was elected Deputy -Mayor, and Cr Teichelmanu, chairman of the Finance Committee, which is the whole Council. The following committees were then elected :—Public Works : Crs Armstrong (chairman), Heinz , Elcock, King, and Heenan. Abattoirs: Crs. King (chairman), Turner and Armstrong. Reserves: Crs Evans (chairman), Turner, Heenan and Duff. Cr Elcock was appointed to represent the Council on tlie High School Board of Governors, and Crs Armstrong, Elcock, Duff and Heenan were appointed a cheque-signing committee. Mrs Martha Moore, Revell Street, applied for permission to erect a suspension verandah on her shop in Revell Street. —Granted.

Messrs Park and Murdoch, Hokitika, applied for consent to transfer lease of Lot 1, subdivision 8, Municipal Endowment Reserve No. 163 from Amos Wall to Sam Warick .Wall. —Approved. The District Engineer, Christchurch, wrote intimating that the Government Railways Amendment Act, 1928, comes into force on June 1 next, and asking that the Council proceed as early as possible with the erection of St. Andrew’s cross signs, which it is required to do by the Amending Act. The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, wrote asking (1) for statistics of heavy traffic fees, and (2) particulars of service cars licensed by this Council to ply within the Borough of Hokitika.

The Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, wrote, giving notification of five cases of diphtheria, and drawing attention to the necessity for cleaning portions of earth drain in Sale Street and Sewell Street, and also an open drain on private property ,and suggesting further that during a period of dry weather, that the open earth drains in the Borough be flushed once a week. Cr Evans, by notice, moved that the Council as a whole visit the outlying portions of the Borough and note any works requiring attention, which he said were many. ! Seconded by Cr Heenan and carried.

Cr Armstrong (Chairman of tlie P.'W. Committee) said the work of laying the Sewell Street drain should be proceeded with at once. Now that the cold weather had set in the time was opportune to carry out this work; the drain in Sale Street should also be done. He moved that the two works mentioned be carried out. Cr King seconded the motion, which was carried.

Cr Evans “suggested that the £lOOO not yet lifted in connection with the £6OOO loan should be applied for in order to secure the £ for £ subsidy being offered by the Government. He would like to see more attention paid to the main highways. Crs Heenan and Turner concurred.

The Abattoirs’ report showed animals slaughtered during the month: 31 cows, 24 heifers, 51 bullocks, 234 sheep, 43 lambs, 25 pigs, 7 calves; condemned 2 pigs. Fees received £72/1/6, compared with £74/14/6 for the same period last year.

MINERS’ MEETING. Messrs J. M. Baddley, and H. Knight, Australian miners’ delegates, will address a public meeting at the Miners’ Hall, Runanga to-morrow (Sunday) morning. The meeting will commence at 10.30 o’clock. In the course of their addresses the speakers will give full details regarding the latest developments of the Australian crisis. All workers are especially requested to be present.
