HOMELAND UNEMPLOYMENT.

LONDON, May 7.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Labour announces that on April 29, there were on th© registers of the employment exchanges 824,000 persons wholly unemployed, 259,900 whose employment was temporarily stopped, and 79,500 normally in casual employment, making a total of 1,1G3,800. The total was 23,078 more than a week before, and 27,797 mor© than a year before. It comprised 907,1000 men, 37,700 boys, 186,000 women and 32,400 girls. ,
| SUGAR CONSUMPTION.
GENEVA, May 10.
At the Economic Conference, as the result of investigation of what is termed the world’s sugar crisis, a proposal is afoot to create an international commission for the purpose of stimulating consumption, as an antidote to the existence of depression in the industry, as it is tacitly acknowledged that any attempt to regulate production and export by international means would be futile.

MAFIA TRIAL.
LONDON, May 10.
“The Times’s” Milan correspondent states that the, trial has begun at Palermo of the* remaining 243 members of the Mafia who have been imprisoned awaiting trial since May, 1926, on charges which range from murder, blackmail, theft, and cattlestealing, to all sorts of minor, offences.
JUVENILE TOURISTS
MONTREAL, May 10.
The young Australians arrived at Winnipeg, where they were the guests of the Rotary Club at luncheon, at which they were given a valuable bronze depicting a buffalo on a marble base. The Hudson Bay Company gave them a large moose head. They proceeded to Regina, where they were again welcomed by the Rotary Club and received by the Saskatchewan Parliament. They attended a luncheon, at which Mr C. M. Hamilton, Minister ol Agriculture, presided.
