QUEEN HOLDS COURT
HER WONDERFUL GOWN
“POKER-FACE” HELEN
(Australian Press Association.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)
LONDON, May 10.
The first Court of the season was unique, because it was the first since the days of Victoria, held by the Queen of England. Despite the absence of His Majesty the King, the ceremonial setting was splendid and presented a majestic spectacle. The Queen appeared in a wonderful gown of iridescent tissue over a dress of pastel shades. She wore the Order of the Garter, and presented a regal figure. The single throne reminded everyone of the illness of the King, but knowledge of his wonderful i progress towards recovery provided an atmosphere of gaiety and joy. Masses of rambler roses and blue and white hydrangeas decorated the room. A stream of debutantes, 500 in number, passed before the throne, made a single curtsey, and then moved along the picture gallery. Miss Helen Wills was the centre of attraction, and there were huge crowds in the Mall, where her motor car was besieged. No duchess of the traditional kind could have exhibited more self control.
