CLOSED DOWN INDEFINITELY.

DUNEDIN, May 11.

The Shag Point coal mine has been closed down, throwing some 80 men out of employment. :• ' In November, aS the mine was not paying, the manager told the men that no dividends had been paid for several years ,and the directors were disinclined to carry on after the award expired in March, unless the working rates were reduced by 5 per cent. The workers declined - and the management offered alternatively to hand over the mine to the men to be worked under supervision of the company’s manager on partnership lines. This : also was refused. .

Later, at a request of the Union, the Conciliation Commjslsioner held a conference, without result.
