HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own. Correspondent.) i HOKITIKA, May 11. An interesting and instructive Missionary school was held in Hokitika yesterday by the Anglican clergy ot the Coast, and a number of the laity of the parish. The Rev. H. J. W. Knight of Amberley, acted as chaplain of the school. Other clergy present v were: Rev. W. Barker, Ahaura; Rev. W. Bell, Cobden; Rev. J. A. Jermyn, Greymouth; Rev. E. Osmers, Ross; the Rev. Nelson Wright, of Hokitika; and the ReV. Mr. Cocks of Kumara. The visiting clergy expressed their pleasure at the success of the school and Mi. Jermyn extended an invitation to hold the next in Greymouth. The visitors warmly thanked Mrs. Wright for the hospitality extended to them. A pleasant evening was spent at St. Mary’s Club Rooms, last evening when the Committee entertained Miss Anne Duff in appreciation of her efforts in organising the recent Crowning ot the Carnival Queen held in the Princess Theatre last Thursday evening. Mr. W. Jeffries, on behalf of the Carnival Committee, mafle the presentation which consisted of a handsome xylonite set. He spoke in eulogistic terms of Miss Duff’s organising ability and her ready acquiescence at all times to help a worthy cause. Miss Cuff briefly replied stating the undertaking had been a pleasure to her. A pleasant hour in music and recitations was passed, and after supper dancing was indulged in. At the Borough Council meeting held last evening the Town Clerk (Mr. Coles) in declaring the result of the recent polls gave comparative figures for the last two Borough elections. In the 1927 election 833 voted out of a roll number of 1409, and in the recent election 1077 voted out of a roll number of 1470. He also pointed out that there were considerably less informal votes cast than in the previous election. In the poll to determine the statutory closing day, in which there were over 30 informal votes over half

of these were due to the voter cross ing out the day he intended to vote for. They had put a line through‘Wednesday and left all the others in. Mr. Coles said it was the cleanest poll he had anything to do with. For the first time in six months the accounts of the Hokitika Borough Council showed a deficit. The receipts for the period were £lO7/18/0, the payments £263/3/6. The debit was £OB/5/4. Owing to a telegram containing returns being overlooked on Wednesday evening the .returns for the Central Riding were incorrectly announced. The revised returns place Mr. Wells in the lead. The corrected figures are: E. A. Wells 383, M. Keenan 269, T. R. Chesterman 265, T. P. O’Neil 204, and H. A. Baucke 100.
