OPERA HOUSE. The old saying, “It’s the woman who pays” is true—sometimes. One time it goes wrong is in “The Phiy Giil, which shows at the Opera House tonight. Mis Bellamy portrays the role of a salesgirl in a florist’s shop who dreams of fine clothes, jewels and easy living. By a twist of fate she gets them but balks when the man who provides them seeks to exact a price. She learns his expenditures in the nature, of an investment, and the battle is on. Her “lady of the mob” is little help; she brings the wrong advice. In the
end a handsome young man, played by Johnny Mack Brown, falls in love with Madge, and convinces the girl that the right way is the only way. MONDAY AND TUESDAY. “Mother Machree” launches a two nights’ run, at the Opera House next Monday. Belle Bennett has the featured role. lord, has made most intelligent use of the Irish background, and Miss Bennett has brought to her part a tenderness seldom seen in pictures.
WALTZING COMPETITION
The competition for the ten-guinea cup for the waltzing championship, to be decided at the Oddfellows’ ball at Blackball on Friday, May 24, is already very keen. The cup is now on view at Kim Williams’s window. The committee is already working hard to ensure everyone an enjoyable evening. MAWHERA HOCKEY DANCE
The Mawhera Hockey Dance every Saturday night in the Oddfellows’ Hall is a big attraction for the week-end. Novelty dances make the evening most enjoyable, and a first-class orchestia. The novelty will be a lucky one-step and .a valuable prize will be awarded the. winner.

On Saturday night, in the Te Kinga Hall, a ball arranged under- the auspices of the Te Kinga Sports Club, was well patronised by visitors from various parts of the-district. During the evening on behalf of the club Mr O’Callaghan presented Mrs ’Becker with a hearthrug as a token of appreciation for assistance rendered during the recent season. Mr J. Patrons of dancing are requested to note that the Te Kinga Sports Club intend to hold another ball at le Kinga on .June 15.
