ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

HOKITIKA, April 18.

The monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society was held last night, Dr. Teichelmann presiding over a fair attendance. A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs notifying re sanctuaries for game. —It was resolved that the Department be asked to make the matter more clear respecting the sanctuaries.

It was reported that pheasants have been released in the Wataroa district, and it was resolved to ask Postmasters in issuing licenses for shooting to ’ notify applicants that pheasants must not be shot.

The Secretary read statistics of the opossum season, showing the revenue derived from trapping last year. In view of the figures of the opossum trapping showing the wealth in the industry, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Braddon to ask permission from the Minister, to liberate opossums in South Westland. The Grey Society wrote approving of employing a full time curator, and offering to pay half expenses on the salary, and on improvements, and also pay half interest on money expended on a new building for the curator’s residence. —The matter of employing a full time curator was held over to be discussed at the annual meeting of the Society.

« Permission was granted Mr F. Andrews to shoot deer on his property at Lake Kanieri. Mr Andrews stated the deer were becoming a nuisance, destroying fences and eating winter feed.

It was reported that a stalker (Mr Kitto, of Wanganui), had secured four very fine heads from the Haast Valley, considered to be the finest heads yet taken out. A discussion took place on the payment of rangers, and the matter was finally left to be decided by the new Council.

REEFTON D.H.S. COMMITTEE (Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, April 18. The regular monthly meeting of the Reefton High School Committee was held last evening. Present, Messrs W. B. Auld (chairman), Panckhurst, Newton, Lawn, Duff, Cleaver, Jas Patterson, A. E. Werry (headmaster).

The headmaster’s report showed primary school roll, No. boys 102, girls 84—186. ; Admitted 9, withdrawn 8 average attendance 169.5, percentage of attendance 91.2. Secondary school: Boys, 41, girls 28—69. Admitted 1, withdrawn 2. Average attendance 64.3, percentage 92.5. It was decided to notify Mr. Thos. McCormick regarding the conditions for awarding the Dux medal. The Nelson Education Board notified the committee that several members of the Board would be visiting Reefton on Tuesday next; also re subsidy on voluntary subscriptions for infants

play ground and stating same was not claimed at the time and asking further to place matter before the Board on Tuesday next. The Grey School Committee wrote re the new syllabus and asking that an opinion be obtained from the householders’ meeting on April 29. —Resolved that the headmaster be invited to explain the new syllabus at the meeting of householders. The balance sheet for presentation at the annual meeting of householders was submitted and approved. The Girl Guides were given permission to use the assembly room for their annual meeting.—lt was resolved to

obtain a cord of wood and some coal. 1 The visiting committee reported certain repairs to spouting and also a top dressing for the material for the footpath. Dental Clinic reports: 170 attendances, 237 operations; 24 patients reexamined at Reefton; 50 125 fillings. Patients were treated at Reefton, Rotokohu, Cronadun, Ikamatua.
