EASTER RACING

RESULTS FROM ALL COURSES

KUMARA CLUB’S MEETING

KUMARA RACING CLUB. MISS MERCIA (WINS GOLDFIELDS favoured, with ideal weather yesterdaythe autumn meeting oi the Kumara Racing Club drew a large number of patrons, who evidently enjoyed the sport provided. The attendance was gieater than last year, and the .gate takings (£251) advanced by £23. The scratching peri was not used to any unusual extent, and in six of the eight events there Were two dividends paid, the chief event of the day product jng the largest field,, nine. During the year the Club has had some improveI merits made to the appointments at the course, the most striking being the reriovatiori arid enlargement of the tptalisator house, which is easily able to deal with clients. The meeting was run smoothly, and th# “stipe,” Mr B. M. Sandilands, of Feilding, had no occasion to intervene, jhe president, Mr J. B. Gilbert, and his officers may be congratulated upon the way in which the meeting was controlled. Handicapping was by Mr J. .Ford, of Reef ton, and generally speaking the interest in the various events showed that his assessments were wellbalanced. Mr R. H. Ford, vice-presi-dent and judge, and his deputy judge, Mr J. Noble, were not called upon to adjudicate in any very close finishes. Mr A. ( G. Wood, the starter, and his assistant, Mr James Brown, performed their duties well; especially as the narrowness of the. course was a hindrance in parading at the barrier. A busy man all day was Mr G. Pamment, the secretary-treasurer, but he gave prompt attention to all the numerous matters submitted to him. When Miss Mercia returned to‘the paddock after her victory in the Ruriiara Goldfields Handicap, the chief event of the day, the President handed her owner, Mr P -F. Thorpy, a case containing gold nuggets, and congratulated him upon his success, especially as he was a local sportsman. In acknowledgment, Mr Thorpy declared that the winning of the Kumara nug- , gets was the envy of every owner and trainer. He paid a tribute to the work of the latter and to the able way in which the jockey had ridden the horse, and he concluded by congratulating the Kumara Club upon the improvements effected on the course. A whip presented to M. Kirwan, who rode Miss Mercia to victory for the first time in her present owner s colours, although she was second in the Orawaiti Handicap at Westport. gift was briefly acknowledged by the recipient. . After the Miners’ Handicap Trot, the rider, F. G. Lynch, appeared before the judicial committee, and was questioned about his having looked back in the straight and having nodded to someone who sang out to him as he neared' the post. The rider denied having looked round, but admitted that the win was so easy that he had • just acknowledged the call to him, but he claimed that he was watching his mount all the time. A fine of £2 was imposed by the Stewards. The totalisator turnover was L/4/0, compared with £7BOO last year, a decrease of £330. This was largely accounted for by the poor betting on the< Junction Handicap, - when only four horses raced, and to the Dillmans Handicap being a one-dividend event. Results were as follow: —

TRIAL STAKES, of 60 sovs, five and a-half furlongs:— (1) Mr J- Johnston’s b.g. KIL1 LADDIE (J. W. Jennings, 8.13 1 (2) Mr J. B. Stewart’s MERCUTIO (A. Messervy 8.13 2 (3) Mr M. R. Spiers WAIKAIA (R. Killaddie was the strong order and he carried the ‘ lion’s share of £550/10/- on the machine, the second dividend being a few shillings better than was received by supporters of the favourite. The order at the barrier was Lucky Rose inside, Mercutio, Waikaia, Killaddie, Miss. Addington, in order and Dragstone on the outside. From an indifferent start, Lucky Rose, Miss Addington and Dragstone were left behind in that order. Waikaia going to the front follqwed by Killaddie, Miss Addington and Mercutio. As they crossed the top, Waikaia was still in the lead but the favourite was closing up fast and' once in the straight went on to win by a head frorii Mercutio, who was a length ahead of Waikaia. Miss Addington was fourth. Time 1.16 $-5. DILLMAN’S HANDICAP, of 70 sovs, ■'six arid a-half furlongs: — (2) Mssrs Donnellan and Shannahari’s ’ trig.' SOME LAD, (by Some Boy II —Jean Laddo (A. The favourite had the inside position at the prist, next being Corinthic, Some Lad, LUcklaine, and Atone in ordqr. Lripk" .laine got a bad start, Deluge being first to the front but after going a furlong Atone showed the way to Deluge, Some Lad, arid Corinthic, Lucklaine beirig last. The order remained without material alteration until coming into the straight when Some Lad made a great run and getting the measure of the field won anyhow by two lengths from Atone, there being a similar distance between the latter gnd Deluge. Corintliic was next. Time 1.27 3-5.' KWARA GOLDFIELDS HANDICAP, of 135 sovs, and gold nuggets valued at 25 sovs., one and aquarter miles: —. 0) Mr P. F. Thorpy’s bg.m. MISS

Flower) 8.0, (5) Rina Munga (V. Lee) 7J2. ' " The principal race of the day found oply four scratchings from a card of 13, and, with the exception of the last race bn the programme the investment of £1177/10 was the most libeta! for the dajy. Goosestep was created a warm ' favourite,' followed by Baby Bun and Miss M e£c i a ’ winner, who paid a moderate dividend, but the best on the day except in the trotting events. A little difficulty was experienced at the starting point, due to Lord Middleton and Rina Munga being restive. Qnce away Para led from Rina Mangu, who had the inside running, while Baby Bun and Fairy Tidings were slow in starting and were ' well behind when the field turned into the straight arid passed the stand with the following in order, in the lead, Para, Rina Mangu, Killaddie, Lord Middleton, Steel Bar, Miss Mercia, and Goosestep. Steel Bar and Miss Mercia made up leeway on the journey to the back of the course where the order was Miss Mercia, Steel Bar, Para, Killaddie, and Rina Mangu with Baby Bun and Fairy Tidings bringing up the rear. The leader had the measure across the top and was first in the run for the judge’s box. Steel Bar faded out of the picture and Para was easily able to withstand a challenge by Killaddie and Rina Mangu. None of them, however, had a chance with Miss Mercia, who caught the judge’s eye four lengths ahead of Para, who was three ahead of Killaddie. Others finished in the following orddr: Rina Mangu, Goosestep, Fairy Tidings, Steel Bar, Baby Bun and Lord Middleton last Time 2.18 2-5 secs.

Kokona was the only defection, and with £964 put through the machine Great Huon was installed favourite £27 ahead of Lord Lupin and £52 better backed than Flying Kate.'The two most favoured had the inside running at the start, but although Royal Audubon started off first she followed Flying Kate past the stand, where the others were in order: Kawana, Great Huon, Lord Lupin, and Cawthron. Flying Kate then went to the front, and was several lengths ahead round the back. Royal Audubon compounded pressure and Kawana ran into second place and challenged the leader across the top but stopped and ' Kawana went on to win nicely by a length from Flying Kate, who was three ahead of Vicari, who beat Great Huon bv a neck. Times 2.28 2-5, 2.28 4-5, 2.23 1-5. FLYING HANDICAP, of 70 sovs, five and a-half furlongs:— (1) Mr W. J. Lane’s br.g. SAGITTARIUS, 6yrs (by Arrowsmith —Going Up) (A. Messervy) 8.7 1 (2) Mr W. Saggittarius was installed favourite by a margin of £5 in a race which circulated £llOO/10/- of the backers money and there was a drop of over £SO to Atone the third favourite. At the starts Bank Draft, who had the inside running jumped out smartly followed by King Cheops, Solgele, and Sagittarius, Royal Heritage was in the rear. The two leaders faded out along the back, and once Solgele was headed by Sagittarius the last-men-tioned made no race of it. He won by four lengths ahead of Solgele, who was ,two lengths ahead of Atone, closely followed by .Royal Lover and Anthonie. Time 1.16. JUNCTION HANDICAP, of 70 sovs., six furlongs: — (3) Mr J. The only other starter was Miss Addington (R. J. Flower), who was handicapped at 7.1, and was last all the way. Baby Bun carried £199 more than Note, who was backed than Rina Mangu,- with Miss Addington taken as an outside chance. From the start, Baby Bun raised the. hope of her supporters and led from Rina Mangu.. -The field was well strpng out along the back but and Rina Mangu established a good lead across tl,ie top. Note also Passed Baby Bun before heading for, the judge’s box, and challenged, but was not equal to the task, Rina Mangu winning with plenty in hand, by five lengths from Note, Baby Bpn being well, beaten four lengths further back. MINERS’ HANDICAP TROT, one mile and a-half, in saddle, 3.50 icla^s:—‘ ’■' (0) M r C. J. Noble’s b.f. FLYING KATE, 3yrs (by Great Audubon —Hack mare) (F. G. Lynch) scr 1 (1) Mr W. T. Lowe’s DENVER HINDS (T. Bennett 120yds .. 2 (3) Mr B.' B. Smith’s LORD LUPIN (C. Isaacson) scr. .'. 3

Also started: (2) Chancellor Boy (G. Holly)’scf., (6) Froud Pointer (P, Jones) scr.,' (4) Spotlight (J. Thornton) 108yds.

, About one-third of the £971 invested went on Denver Hinds, Chancellor Boy and Lord Lupin carrying roughly half as much each. At iftie start, away ovei' at the back of the course, Spotlight, and Chancellor Boy stood as the flag was dropped and Flying Kate and Lord Lupin went out a long way ahead of Chancellor Boy. Past the stand, Flying Kate led but after they rounded the bend, she broke. Lord Lupin passed her for a furlong, out the Great Audubon mare soon got into her stride again and took the lead along the back, where Denver Hinds crept up. Flying Kate looked like stopping at the bend to the' straight and Denver Hinds’ chances became rosy, but the leader again Jeft the favourite and finished the journey a very easy winner by four lengths from Denver Hinds, the rest being well back. Tinies 3.55 4-5, 3.47 1-5, 4.0. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of SO. soys., seven furlongs: — (1) Mr R. C. Keeper’s by.g. RONAKI, Gyrs., by Solferino — Zita) (E. Olson) 8.0 .... 1 (3) Mr W. McMillian),. 7 Dragstone (R. J. Flower). Ronaki was made a favourite by £7O in the biggest betting race of the day, when £1265 was put through the machine. Bank Draft caused trouble at the barrier, but wffen Ronaki jumped away smartly from the outside position he led Shining Star and Para round the back and was never headed, although Para, having stalled off one challenge by Shining Star across the top, made a fruitless effort to get even. Ronaki however, more than held his own cnee into line for the post and he w.-.h comfortably by 2J lengths from Shining' Star, who again headed Para and passed the box a length to the good. Bank Draft was fourth, followed by Gaslight, Doleful Ditty and Dragstone. Time 1.345. C.J.C. AUTUMN. GREAT EASTER TO CIMABUE, CHRISTCHURCH, April 1. For the first day of the C.J.C. Perfect weather prevailed for the opening day of the Canterbury .Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting, and it is doubtful if there has ever been a bigger crowd at Riccarton on any Easter Monday/ Th© course was in ideal order, last. week's rain having taken

all the sting out of it; Early in the day it was rumoured that Silver Paper wouM Mt contest the Great Easter Handicap, as his usual jockey, J ' Ellis, was not available. At the eleventh hour Mr. Stone secured the services of R. Beale. Though it was known that he was indifferent about starting his representative, Silver Paper ran a peculiar race, as, after being last in the early stages, he was galloping over everything at the finish, and that he would have done much bettei Yith Ellis in the saddle admits of no doubt.’ ■ ' Lancer, who was in less demand than Troilus and Radiate for the Kildare Hurdles, owed his defeat to faulty jumping. Troilus acted as pacemaker till within two furlongs from home, where he retired well beaten. No sooner had Lancer settled Rangitahi’s pretentions than Radiate came along with a well sustaned run, which landed him a winner by half a length. At each of his jumps Lancer lost nearly a length by dwelling, and making up this leeway left him without a finishing effort when tackled by Radiate. Troilus ran like a non-stayer, while Kulrange was outclassed. On appearance Pink Coat dominated the field of six that went out to contest the old established Champagne Stakes, and was backed to an extravagant odds on price. He and First Money made the running throughout, and at the Stewards’ Stand the Northerner looked to have the favourite’s measure. Struggling on with the utmost gamenegs, Pink Coat just got up in the last few strides to win by inches, after one of the most spirited finishes in the history of the race. Pink Coat was at a big disadvantage in not having the services of L. Ellis, who has ridden him in all his previous engagements. On this occasion he was piloted by A. Murray, who hardly did his mount full justice. First Money went his best race to date, but is likely to be overshadowed by Pink Coat in their three-year-old engagements. Disorder, who is still on the green side, went a creditable race, finishing up within a' length of the leading pair. The Autumn Plate did not arouse much interest, but even so it produced a. nice contest. Jumping out smartly, Thurso led to within a few strides of the post, where quite half a dozen looked to have winning chances By a rare finishing effort, Starshootei jus got up in time tp defeat Thurso by neck ‘ Then in close order came The Viscount, who went out favourite, Hurly Burly and Phastar. Francolip was resp ? ns . l ? le I?l ;°S_ v high-class performance m the Russlej Plate, for, though making liberal concessions to the big field of year-olds, she simply buried them when it came to business. Leadei, a big son of Chief Ruler and Formless, made a promising debut by defeating all but the winner, and when more seasoned he will show to advantage. Neither Straight Course nor. Stately, who were next in demand to Francolin, ran up to expectations. Silver Paper was made a strong older for the Great Easter Handicap, while there was spirited backing also for Cimabue, Royal Saxon, Great Star and Booster. In the matter of condition nothing looked better than Cimabue, who was in much better order than when he raced at Trentham. Silver Paper, Meadow' Lark, Royal Saxon and Great Star all looked fitted for the fray, but Booster and Magna Charta were hardly ready. When the big field had settled down to business Meadow Layk was just showing out from Great Star, Royal Saxon and Cimabue, with Silver Paper nearly last. Going round the top turn Great Star was well clear from Meadow Lark, Royal Saxon and Cimabue. At this stage Silver Paper was trailing his field.- Great Star held his place to the distance, where Cimabue soon had his measure and won convincingly by a lepgth. At a three lengths interval edrne Meadow Lark, Silver Paper, Seatown and Magna Charta. The Hastings-trained Bernera saw a short price for the Gimcrack Handicap, but after having every chance he was beaten out of a place. Caterpillar was one of the quickest to begin and soon opening up a big gap never afterwards left the issue in doubt. Impertinence finished so well in second place as to suggest a race soon coming her way, but Bernera’s effort was too bad. to be true. This) marked Caterpillar’s third successive win, and the best of her has not yet been demon strated.

Though there were only four starters for the Sockburn Handicap, it provided one of the most interesting contests of the day. Prickles, who was the outsider of the party, looked a winner until within a furlong of the post, where Battle Colours closed on her. Sticking to her task gamely, Prickles only suffered defeat by a head, the result being brought about by Emerson’s vigorous finishing effort on Battle Colours.

Buoyant, Tripaway,. Quarter Deck and Silver Coot were the most fancied candidates for the Courtenay Handicap, but the first-named put up a disappointing- rafe. Silver Coot soon opened up a useful lead, which, he held comfortably to the finish, defeating Tripaway by two lengths. Nincompoop, after getting well away, stopped badly, and Aberfeldy quite failed to reproduce his recent form. AUCKLAND R.C. FIRST PAYAUCKLAND, March 30. At Ellerslie the course was heavy after heavy rain for the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting. The weather was fine, although overcast and threatening at times. There was a large attendanceThe tote receipts for the day were £71,7505, compared with £86,7651 for the corresponding day of last year, a decrease of £15,015; Results: — President’s handicap, of 600 sovs.; l?i miles.—3 Hyde Park 7.4 (H. Gilmer) 1; 1 Toxeuma 8.7, 2; 9 Eager Rose 7.0 3. Also started: 5 Qprinax, 4 The Lover, 6 Desert Glow, 2 Queen Arch, 11 Wenday, 10 Sir Archie, 7 Glenstar, 8 Sleepy Sol. Hyde Park came away at the - distance, winning in fine style by two and a-half lengths, with third horse three lengths away, and Corinax fourth. Time 2.12 2-5. Great Northern Oaks, of 700 sovs • li miles.—l Prodice, 8,10 (C. France) 1; 5 Gold Money, 8.10, 21 6 Te Money, 8-10, 3. Also started: 4 Kawainga, 3 Llanore, 2 Lucy Rose, 7. Mon Star. Katuscha and Mithra were the only scratchings for the Great Northern Oaks, leaving a field of seven Prodice, owing to her good form in the classic events this season, was made a hot favourite, carrying nearly half the investments on the machine while Lucy Rose and Llanore had fair support: Kawainga and Mon Star were the first to show out and led past the stand from Gold Money, Lucy Rose, Llanore, Prodiee and Te Money. Along the back Mon Star and Kawainga l

were attended by Lucy Rose, Prodice, Gold Money, Llanore and Te Money. Prodice had taken charge before the top was reached, her nearest attendants being Kawainga, Gold Money, Llanore and Te Money, with Lucy Rose and Men Star last. Shp was first to turn for home from Gold Money, Llanore, Te M oney > Kawainga arid Lucy Rose. Prodice had no dim; culty in going on to win by four, lengths front Gold Money who. led Te Money by eight lengths. Kaiwamga Llanore and Mon Star finished as named. Time 2.42 1-5. Brighton Hurdles, of 500 soys.; two miles'.—-11 Clockwork 8.21 (H. Duheu) 1; 1 Kilburn 9,7, 2; 2 Kawini 10.12, 3. Also started: 4 Beau Cavalier, 7 King’s Guard, 3 "Wiltshire, Mangani, 9 Ramblin’ Kid, 8 Glenotus, 10 Karamu, 12 Kamehameha, 6, Odin. Kilburn was installed a good favourite, carrying £1491, the next in demand being Kawini £1432 and Wiltshire which carried ' £1027. The winner carried only £234. Going to the fiist 'fence Clockwork was leading fiom Kilburn and Odin. Beau Cavalier and Ramblin’ Kid both fell at the first obstacle. Going past* the stand Clockwork had a lead of eight lengths from Odin. Kilburn and Wiltshire were together and then came Kamehameha, King’s Guard, Mangani, Glenotus, Karamu and Kawini. Along the back Clockwork was 12 lengths clear of Odin and Kilburn, who were still together. Wiltshire was next and then followed King’s Guard, Kawini, Mangini, Kamehameha, Glenotus and Karamu. Crossing the top the order was Clockwork well out from Kilburn and Odin, with Kawini, Wiltshire, Kamehameha, Mangani and King’s Guard following. Clockwork led into the straight several lengths in front of Kilburn, Kawini and Odin in that order,, Wiltshire, Kamehameha, and Mangani being in the rear.
