PAPER PULP INDUSTRY CANBERRA, March 23.
The early establishment in Australia in a substantial way of the newsprint manufacturing industry, was indicated by Mr. Bruce, who said that the Government would pay a bounty of £4 a ton upon newsprint manufactured in Australia from Australian timber.
JOHNSON’S CONVICTION. SYDNEY, March 22.
The Federal Attorney-General (Mr Latram) informed the House of Representatives that if James Andresen would make a statutory declaration that Jacob Johnson was imprisoned on false evidence, further action would be taken.

Australia transacted business with oversea countries, in the past year, valued at 291 millions, compared with the previous year’s, valued at 310 millions. Export values dropped last year by seventeen millions to 143 millions. The United Kingdom supplied fortytwo per cent of the total imports. During 1927-8 the imports from New Zealand totalled £3,318,000, while exports to New Zealand totalled £3,854,000.
EMPIRE TELEPHONY SYDNEY, March 23.
Speaking on the subject of Empire telephony at a radio dealers’ luncheon at which New Zealand was represented, Mr. E. T. Fisk, managing director of Amalgamated Wireless Ltd., referred to the important investigations and tests his organisation had been making in short wave telephony with New York, Java, Berlin, Paris and other places, but for some reason he was unable to understand, the British Post Office authorities seemed unwilling to undertake the experiments asked for from Sydney.
Mr. Fisk added it would seem that there are some influences at work to prevent these experiments between Bri . tain and Australia. The utilisation of the radio-telephone service for even two hours daily between the cities of Australia or New Zealand, would be an immense advantage.
