CRICKET
WESTRALIA v. ENGLAND.
(Australian Press Association.) (By Gable—Press Assn—Copyright.)
PERTH, March 22.
In the cricket match Westralia made 310 in 356 minutes. Richardson car-
ried his bat for one past the century. Larwood’s fast bowling upset the tail of the team.
There was a sensational opening of England’s innings. Halcombe, the local fast bowler, who incapacitated Geary in the last Westralian match, caught Tate on the fleshy part of the leg with his third ball. Tate was assisted off the ground. Tyldesley, who escaped Halcombe, scoring a single, placed the next ball an easy catch to Horrocks. Mead and Hammond gave a vigorous display of free hitting. At the latest Tate was able to walk round the enclosure. Scores : — WESTRALIA—FIRST INNINGS. Negotiations which have been proceeding between the Association and Hendren have fallen through.
To-day, Mr. P. B. Broad, chairman of the Wellington Association, stated that the terms which Hendren asked in his cable to Wellington -were too high, and the matter was closed. The local cricket authorities were under the impression that Hendren was willing to settle in New Zealand for some time, but his cables do not bear out this.
It has been reported that Maurice Tate was willing to come to New Zealand, but the Wellington Association has made no move in the matter. Mr. Broad believes that the report of Tate’s willingness to come here is in error. RUNANGA v. WAIUTA. The local cricket competitions will be brough tTo a close to-morrow when the final of the Junior Championship will be played at the Recreation Ground, between Runanga (the present holder of the Wingham Shield) and Waiuta, the leading team in the Inangahua section. Play will commence at 11 a.m. and the luncheon adjournment will be from 12.45 until 1.45. The umpires will be Messrs Patterson and B. Ryan.
