The high prices ruling for stock are the cause of much embarrassment tn Hamilton butcherg. During the last six months four butchers have gone •out of business in Hamilton, and the remainder have decided to make an extra charge of Id per lb for delivery and Id per lb for booking. A prominent Hamilton butcher stated that the Hamilton cash prices over the counter were equal to those charged in Auckland, but the high overhead charges, which included the cost cf driving cattle to the abattoirs at Horotiu, eight miles away, compelled the butchers, to impose charges for booking and delivering meat.

A plucky and successful resistance against the combined savage attack of two hawks was made by the 11-year-old son of Mr Joseph Smith, of Maromaku, North Auckland, on a recent Sunday afternoon. The boy was passing through some fern when he disturbed a pair of hawks feeding on something they had killed. They attacked him simultaneously, one at his neck and the other at a leg. He was fortunate in having a knife with him, and he used it to good effect to beat them off, at the same time calling for help. He also managed to wound and secure them by beating them with a Stick he .nicked up, after which he tcok the birds home, where they were found to have a wing spread of over 4ft. each. The boy’s face and arms were badly marked by the claws and beaks of the birds, and he had to be treated when he arrived home.
