HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 23. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perrv), Crs. Jas. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong, Dr Teichelmann ,and !W. Jeffries. J. W. application for tenancy of Reserve No. 527.—Withdrawal granted. N.Z. ■ Refrigerating Co., Christchurch, wrote intimating that the following carcases were delivered into Hokitika during the month of January 1929Tw0 sheep, live lambs, one cattle. The New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks wrote intimating that the Institute meets at Wanganui on March 5, and asking the Council to be so good as to facilitate the attendance of the Town Clerk. The Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote, intimating that the Foreman’s request for the Brigade to give a rigid test to the water presure would be attended to without delay. The Chairman No. 12 District Highways Council wrote re traffic inspectors on main highways. A. Keller wrote re footpath in Sale Street North, asking that it receive attention.—Referred to the P.W. Committee to attend to, also to remove gorse, etc., in Hall Street.
The Treasurer’s report showed receipts amounting to £135 18/9, payments £5O 4/, credit balance £324 15/3Accounts amounting to £4B 15/ were passed for payment. Cr Evans, by notice, moved: (1) “That application be made to the Highways Board to extend the highway within the Borough : (a) in respect to Fitzherbert Street, via Gibson Quay to the Post Office ; (b) in respect to Stafford Street via Weld Street to Revell Street (the main thoroughfare of the town).” Cr Evans pointed out that Hokitika, was a terminus town, where tourists stay over-night and traffic leads to the heart of the town( consequently highway traffic is not confined to the main highway.— Seconded by the Mayor and carried. Cr Evans also moved : “That application be made to the Highways Board to ascertain the rate of subsidy payable for tar-sealing the main highway in the Borough.” The Mayor seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr Duff asked that attention be directed to widening Sewell Street ’North at the turn leading from the railway. This matter and the clearing of gorse was left with the P.W. Committee, with power to act.
