PEOPLE’S DAY

AT A. AND P. SHOW PERFECT WEATHER CONTINUES continuance of the perfect weather conditions to-day ensured the success of People’s Day in connection with the seventh annual Show of the West Coast Agricultural, Pastoral, and Industrial Association, at Victoria Park. The attendance this afternoon was much better than it was yesterday, although the latter was satisfactory for the first day of the Show. The officials were all busily occupied, from the President (Mr. H. W. Kitchingham) downwards, while Mr. J. Saunders made an energetic and capable secretary.

The dog show was a greater success than ever, the exhibits being of a better quality. There were fewer working sheep-dogs, which should in any case figure at trials rather than at shows. Well-bred collies, however, constituted a section which was of a high standard. It was significant that there were no whippets shown. Fox terriers formed a big class in which the exhibits were really good. Miss V. Kettle scooped the pool with her dogs in the smooth haired breed, while Mr. W. M; .lack’s Red cot Reversion was outstanding amongst the wire-haired variety, and he also showed a splendid dog puppy. Ryburn Radiant, of which Redcot Reversion was the sire, and which could be reckoned as the best pup on parade. Mr. Joseph Conning of Hokitika, showed Rennie of Rylems, and scored four firsts in the classes for Alsatians, a breed which has recently come under controversial criticism relative to temper.

Miss Billcliffe. who was secretary of the Canterbury Kennel Club for several years and who is an ardent fancier, expressed to a “Star” representative the opinion that the class of dogs shown in Greymouth was such that local people could well entertain fortnation of a Kennel Club. There was plenty of local material to warrant it, and she was sure that if a Club were formed and parades were arranged to boost tha breeding of good dogs, assistance would be forthcoming from Canterbury dog-fanciers. Commenting upon the sheep entries. Mr. J. H. Grigg, of Longbeach Station, who judged all classes declared that the standard of the winning pens in the farmers’ fat lambs contest was a credit to the Coast. The same remark applied to the exhibits by Mr. John Brown, of Totara Flat, of ewe-lambs suitable for retention for breeding purposes for the West Coast. The Association was indebted to Mr. Alan Grant of Waimate for his fine display of stud Romneys and Southdowns, his sheep being of a very high class which resulted in his retention of the D.C.L. Challenge Cup and Mr. E. McDonnell’s memento for the exhibitor gaining most points in the sheep section. Mr. Grant has not yet been beaten for the trophies which were competed for first three years ago. Some of the cattle exhibited came from considreable distances, a lot of it by train, but special mention is deserving of the effort to help the Association made by Mr. Arthur E. Dimmick, of Koiterangi, who brought a lorry load a distance of over 17 miles. This was a creditable move towards making the show’ a success, but unfortunately some of the cattle showed signs of rubbing occasioned during their trip. The art section was rather disappointing and what should have been an interesting exhibition was restricted to the work of half a dozen artists or amateur photographers. F. R. Denne showed two well coloured photographs of merit and also good view’s of the Punakaiki Rocks and the Coastal road, while C. Sundbye’s enlarged photograph of a view’ on the Avon, and a happily caught snap in silhouette of a cat were noticeable contributions. The grand parade attracted much attention this afternoon, and the sports programme was proceeding as the “Star” went to press.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS Championships in the various classes were awarded as follow: — Hack and Harness: Miss V. M. Nichols (Fairlie) “Plato.” Ram, any breed: Mr. Alan Grant’s (Waimate) Romney. Ewe, any breed: Mr. A. Grant's (Waimate) Southdown. Champion Bull: Mr. T. Minehan’s (Cobden) “Selbournos Owler,” 1; Mr. A. C. Kilpatrick’s (Greymouth) “Swaney Lad,” reserve. Champion Cow: Mr. A. J. Palmer’s (Rotomanu) “Lady Betty,” 1; Horan Bros. (Coal Creek) “Allandale Flossy” reserve. ASHBY BERGH CUP The Cup donated by Ashby Bergh & Co., Ltd., for three fat lambs most suitable for the Dominion’s export trade, was won by the entry of W. O’Malley, Ikamatua, the lambs weighing 76.1 lbs., 78J lbs., and S2£ lbs. The second prize was awarded to W. Clayton, Ahaura, whose lambs weighed 793 lbs, 94:1 lbs., and 89 lbs. Third prize went to H. G. Carter, Kaniaka, the lambs weighing 118 lbs., 1063 lbs., and 101 J lbs. The ideal weight for the purpose of this class is considered to be about 80 lbs. There were seven entries. The Cup must be won three times in succession or four times at intervals, before becoming the property of the winner. Previous winners are as f0110w:—1924 and 1925, Drayton and Sons, Kopara; 1926, A. Burt, of Ruby Creek, claims to have discovered an effective destroyer of the deadly ragwort weed, which has become so abundant on Coast holdings. This morning Mr. Burt showed a “Star” representative a specimen of the destroyed plant. Inside the fleshy root-base, the centre of which is completely destroyed, were dozens of just visible white insects which under a glass proved to possess the characteristics of a small horned grub. Each individual, even when the plant was dead, could be seen feeding voraciously on the walls of the hollow stem. It is this little white insect which does the killing. Four years ago Mr. Burt casually examined a ragwort found dead apparently from natural causes, in his paddock. Then he first noticed the insects. He preserved them, “innoculated” several other plants and to-day the “killer” has spread over an area of half a square mile, and killed this year over a thousand ragworts. Mr. Burt has been saved the trouble of killing these plants himself and hopes shortly to be able to save the £2O expenses which, on an average every West Coast farmer has to pay for labour to clean out the weed from his pastures. With this definite proof of the effectiveness of his “find” Mr. Burt wrote, giving particulars, to the Cawthron Institute in Nelson. The Chief of the Entomological Branch replied stating that the insect was the larvae of a small fly commonly found in ragwort stems, and that it will not kill the weed ’ but materially weakens them. Mr. Burt states emphatically that the insect actually kills the ragwort without any outside aid. From his specimen it could be seen that the larvae travelled from the roots into the base and up the stem eating into the plant’s food-channels. The root hairs are evidently destroyed and the root’s strength absorbed. The jtveeds are attacked annually before the seeds are properly formed and all the farmer has to do is to collect and burn the affected ragworts. Mr. Burt has communicated his discovery to the Minister of Lands, and to the New Zealand “Farmer” but has received no reply as yet. He fears that, in burning the killed weeds on his farm (he has been doing so for the last few days) he is destroying the insects which might prove invaluable at a later date, should the larvae be accepted as a universal destroyer of the pest. An important feature is that no other plants or weeds are effected by the larvae, which apparently turns into a fly and lays its eggs at the base of other weeds.

Mr. Burt displayed a specimen of the destroyed weed at the A. and P. Show to-day, where it interested many farmers. To the layman there seems to be no doubt that the insect is a genuine destroying agent of ragwort, and further developments in Mr. Burt’s discovery will be eagerly awaited by all farmers.
